Knee Sprains

Anybody have experience with sprained knees? Thursday evening, I was out with my dog Cyrus, who weighs a little over 100 pounds and is extremely powerful for his size. Anyway, he was going for a squirrel that suddenly reversed course when he slammed into my left leg--just like clipping in football. Down I went! When I attempted to arise, my knee buckled under me, and I went down again. Some kindly bystanders came to my aid, and a couple of kindly young people drove me home, while a burly employee of the gas company agreed to walk Cyrus home. (We were not far from my house.) He commented that the dog was much stronger than he looked.

As best I can discern, I am pretty certain it is a sprain of the medial cruciate ligament. I seem to be recovering fairly rapidly and can get around pretty well with the assistance of a cane and often move around the house without the cane. Depending on how I feel tomorrow, I may make an appointment with a chiropractor I have used. He is a specialist in sports injuries and has worked a lot with local football teams like the USC Trojans. However, if I keep mending as rapidly as I have been, I may not bother with this.

Anyway, anybody have any similar experiences?

My dad had the exact same experience with my dog. Having dinner with him tonight; I know he had it looked at, I'll ask what the exact diagnosis/treatment was and how long it took to heal.

I had bad knees growing up and (long story) dislocated and sprained both knees many times (more than 30 times, right knee).

A chiro's not who you want for ligament issues... it will probably nag you for a while, and surprise you just when you thought it was OK... keep icing it and take an anti-inflammatory.

If it nags a few more days, get an x-ray (which wouldn't hurt to do anyway).

Dad didn't remember the exact diagnosis, but said he got a cortisone shot and was feeling better in 2-3 days. As I said, his experience was very similar - dog went straight into the side of his leg, he went down, tried to stand, knee buckled and down again.

Then again, my dog was only about 50 pounds at the time, so you may be looking at 4-6.

Hope it doesn't turn out to be anything too serious.

I sprained my MCL playing football back when I was in HS. I got a knee mobilizer which I mainly used when I slept to prevent me from hurting it more when I would turn over in my sleep. I was able to walk normally in about 2 weeks but couldn't do any running for about 4 months without any severe pain. I also didn't get the full range of motion in back in my knee until about 3 months later.

Ice 20 minutes on at a time + 2 aleve AND 2 tylenol's twice a day.

Chiro will be useless for a sprain. If you're walking around on it, and there isn't severe pain, you're pretty much ok. It'll just take time.
