I'm curious which part is machine made. I know the top stitching is machine while just about everything else is done by hand. They're new seamless wholecut is done on a specialized machine that no one is allowed to see or touch except for maybe 3 people.

Price is really high for JLP compared to every other maker besides Berlutti and maybe Corthay. I know JLP doesn't use any out workers (or whatever they're called) while most English makes do (not sure if JLSJ does). That might account for some of the much higher pricing along with the fact they're paying Paris rent.

I was referring to the seamless wholecut and the other models that use the new machine. Those are $10,000. The regular bespoke is about $8200. Huge jump over the last three years.

Thank you everyone for all the great input. True about most of their shoes (at least the ones we get to see in pics) being blobby and unattractive. I swear to you, often when I see some of these shoes I will say not only will I not pay $5K to buy them, I will not take $5K to wear them. That's how bad they look to my eyes. But I suppose, as Griffyndor said, they can do whatever you ask them to do.

Not sure who would wear shoes built on these lasts, but I am almost confident to say that these people could not possibly also own shoes by G&G built on their TG73 last, say. How can anyone be into both the TG73 and these Lobb lasts? I just cannot imagine.

So I suppose the following pair that just got listed is a bargain of the kinds that does not happen often? And the seller also takes offers:

I didn’t realize that other models are using that machine. I thought it was only the seamless wholecut while other models are still largely made by hand.

$8200 is some inflation. That’s $1000 in less than 2 years. I’m thinking of getting another pair made in 2019 so it should be cheaper with no lasting fee but $7000 is still a crap ton. At least my first pair of bespoke shoes got me a pour of Louis Tre and a free resole for one of my RtW JL shoes. That’s probably like $600 saved.

no, you got that backwards a little. That's more like $8200-$600=$7600 extra spent.

I think it’s only 3 or 4 models, all of which have 0 or 1 seem, that use the machine. I would bet the handwork is the same on everything else. I didn’t mean to imply that it was everything. Although I do like the idea that with Lobb St. James having my lastmaker measure my foot and do the fitting.

I think I paid $6400 at JLP in 2014. I love the shoes but the increase feels like too much. The shoes are great no doubt. I bet you save a good bit of money if you visit Paris frequently enough to order/pickup there.

2016 cost me $7200. I guess a $1000 increase over 2 years almost sounds normal.

Have you tried to catch the Prestige model on sale at JL NYC? I did last summer and could not be happier with the quality and the value. At least 50% off or more. It is hard to justify a custom last at those prices.

I used to hit that sale every year. I agree the shoes are great and it’s a good relative value. For my foot, unfortunately there is a really big difference in fit between the RTW and the well done bespoke, although I think that the JLP bespoke price differential is a little hard to justify over other bespoke makers. But yeah - the John Lobb RTW is great. I’ve got a pair that i bought at the sale in 2004 that I still wear.

RED MUSEUM CALF

Gents, does anyone own a pair of JL Shoes in Red Museum Calf? If so can you post up some clear pics? Is it really a "loud red" or more muted and closer to burgundy?

I'm looking for a dress shoe in burgundy/oxblood (for versatility). I found a JL model I like in Red Museum Calf and I wonder if it could be darkened with polish or is it just a "bridge too far"?

Do you have any pictures of those bespoke wholecuts that use that special machine?

Sorry, but I can't help. I don't have anything with red museum calf and I don't think I've seen any RMC shoes in the Houston boutique.
