Before the germs and lack of manicures got him.

The roundness of the shoulders in the first picture look interesting.

He's missing his tissue box shoes though.

That contrasting sleeve collar number looks it...

The 3rd, 4th, and 5th pictures look to be from his Sears, Pennys, and Woolworths period.

Madman, genius, American.

So, he was an extremely powerful man, in the public eye, right at the time when American ascendency was not only real, but beginning to be recognized.

What message did his photographs send to the Old Order?

My opinion: one message was, "Your time is up, f*ckers."

Not entirely true. I believe that Hughes was vain and particularly liked his hats. He was willing to spend $$$ on hats that he liked. I know a prominent Houstonian that owns one of Hughes hats and it's certainly not a Sears & Roebuck piece of crap.

I guess, in general, you are right. Hughes was also legendary for his sloppiness and eccentricity and would wear some strange and cheap stuff too.

Here is Hughes today! I visit him often since Glenwood Cemetery ( where he is buried ) is within walking distance of my home. And Hughes is buried about 50' from a fascinating character named Craig Cullinan, who was a very dear friend of mine at the and of his life.

Craig Cullinan's Grandfather Joe Cullinan was the founding and principal partner of Texaco Oil Company. Craig was older than me and by the time we were running around together, he had blown 99.9% of his money. But he was an amazing character and loved good times, fast women, and titty bars well into his 80s! And I really miss him. I love to pay my respects to him and remember the good old times and historic Houston.

If his nails aren't three inches long and he isn't urinating in milk bottles, I'm not interested.

Now for the real challenge

Does anyone have pictures of him wearing a jacket when his nails got too long and his hair long and shaggy...or did he only wear sweaters?

Did he step out in public at this stage of his life?
