Why would someone stick out wearing classic clothing? Seems more likely that those who stick out are wearing decidedly non-classic clothing.

Why would someone stick out wearing classic clothing?
Last weekend my wife and I spent the day in the city capping it off with dinner. The weather was agreeable so I wore a blue sport coat with a pocket square, ivory chinos and bit loafers with a sock liner.
My wife was on a mission; find a very specific style skirt. We hit RL, Neiman’s and Saks. At each place, I was mistaken for a sales associate. Before that, I grabbed a cappuccino from the coffee bar and Nordstrom and the kid behind the counter asked for my employee number.
It didn’t necessarily bother me but I just thought how pathetic and some would see the wearing of a sport coat as meaning anything other than just trying to be presentable.
I think you answered your own question lol

There is nothing conservative about that atrocious pocket square with decorative stitching (?) along the edges. The rest is hard to argue with and I doubt DWW would take issue with it, except perhaps for the boxy cut of the suit and the fake pick-stitching along the lapels (just an informed guess).
Fwiw I think those are both good looks. By sheer coincidence, here I am in a grey linen suit and white canvas trainers, just a couple of weeks ago (shirt is a linen jersey polo):

(That cafe is in the centre of Amsterdam, and tbh I think I stood out a bit. Maybe not too much. Not sure.)
In your story, you stuck out wearing CM. Not sure if you were exaggerating but you mentioned being mistaken for a sales associate at each store and that most likely wouldn’t be the case in more casual wear.
I’ve never been mistaken for a salesperson when wearing CM.
If you’re wearing a yellow suit or the equivalent, you’re announcing to the world that you’re either a clown or an extreme badass. It’s highly unlikely you are actually the latter so everyone will understand you to be the former
