It happens and it can be very amusing. Why would someone stick out wearing classic clothing?
I recall going for a Richard Anderson fitting at the Fairmont in San Francisco. Naturally I wore tailored clothing. On the way down in the elevator, a woman -- in tourist sweats -- got on and started asking me questions about the hotel. I informed her I didn't know the answers. She asked me if I could find out. I realized she thought I worked there, but as the elevator was at the first floor I simply said "I'm sorry I can't help you." This woman followed me to the desk. As I stood there thanking the concierge for a favor she'd done, the woman suggested they fire me for being unhelpful. The clerk informed the woman that I was not an employee of the hotel. It was truly amusing to watch her face. I winked and left.
After that little incident I was walking down Powell to Union Square when I noticed two youngish fellows in modest trad suits crossing the street. One elbowed the and other pointed to me. As both looked my direction the elbowed fellow said "Too dressy" and just then walked straight on into a lamp post. All I said was "Karma'.
The are times that CM can stand out.
