Leather Artisans
A few years ago when denim was the watchword by which StyleForum attracted new hits, and everyone and their mom was buying Engineered Garments, custom-made, custom-sized belts produced by small leatherworkers got really popular. Now, in the dark, grim designer future we live in (at least in the Streetwear and Denim forum), belts have been replaced by drawstrings and tailoring, and it’s a shame. There’s something nice about having a beautiful, custom-made belt – that you helped design – with only a single hole because it’s fitted perfectly to your waist size (down to the CM). This thread (unsurprisingly begun back in 2010) is a tribute to all those wonderful leatherworkers out there, a number of whom even sell their work on our fair forum! Check it out and start a revival.
DIY
We also have a great DIY (do it yourself!) thread. Some of our members are insanely talented, and seeing them transform thrifted clothing into spot on Saint Lauren ripoffs is pretty awesome to watch. From step-by-step guides (with lots of pictures and hilarious commentary), to images of tacky disasters, sometime it’s fun to imagine clothing in a new context.
How to Make Shoes
DIY thread aside, I think the most impressive example of StyleForum posters producing clothing and finishing awesome projects is the small number of posters who have started making their own handmade, bespoke shoes. Seriously it’s mind blowing both how quickly people are able to develop their cobbling skills, and how amazing the end products actually look, completely at home with the John Lobbs and Berlutis of the world. If you’ve ever thought to yourself “gee I would love to get started making my own shoes, but how?” then this is the thread by you: created by an actual, real world bespoke shoemaker, it’s a step-by-step guide on how to make your own shoes. I know your first attempt will be awful, but you gotta start somewhere.
