I don't have a general theory about this, but to my eye the first illustration looks better because the jacket seems to have a blue hue to the grey. Which seems to suggest that grey odd jackets can be OK, but sticking to the more tried and tested combinations (e.g. blue, perhaps the archetipal odd jacket) is better.

^^^ The stripes don't show up on my monitor at all.

Besides, you are Beyond Good and Evil in these matters.

They are huge alternating black/navy (jacket is silk/cotton). Having tried wearing my black/white striped jacket with jeans I can tell you I am not beyond good and evil, in retrospect I looked like a glaringly stupid cadavre exquis drawing.

Yeah, mine is a pretty giant chalk as well. You can't miss them.

.. Sorry, couldn't resist. There does seem to be some benefit from pairing a cool (blueish) gray with warm white (cream) trousers.

It may work even better in a few years when your hair starts to turn grey (I learned all that I know about clothes from Flusser's book)

Off White or Cream, why not. Sounds like fun and well worth looking into.

I would not go with pure white though.

Would a dark grey SB patch pocket corduroy jacket be inappropriately matched with light grey or white flannel trousers?

Manton, do you already have a bright Navy Blue DB blazer to match with the white flannel trousers...if yes could you post a quick pic of it?

I remember Baron wearing a light (?) gray flannel(-ish?) jacket with off-white flannel pants. His jacket was SB though. White shirt and brown knit tie, if I recall correctly. A very nice outfit. I don't have my super-scary, multiple-terrabyte-SF-pic-folder at hand, else I'd post pics.

And what would be a winter variation of this combination? Winter white flannel trousers are difficult to pair. Perhaps a heavy green/maroon/blue/tan corduroy? Or cavalry twill or whipcord in similar colours?

I still think that a blue coat just works better, though. Yes, it's much more common, but I never thought that standing out was valuable per se, and making a classic combination unique is a much more interesting and challenging operation. That said, I might try this grey coat thing, just to see.
