It's extremely hard for me to imagine Michael Silverstein describing the "devolution of language," unless he were either a) tongue-in-cheek or b) voicing a particular language ideology. Key to his thought is the trichotomous unity of structure, practice, and ideology as they mutually effect each other historically. So language change, yes. Devolution? Probably not.

I think it was based on a citation from Cleanth brooks, who was really into the idea that language devolves but then evolves from that devolution. I read like 100 pages but then got lost in secondary texts, which will happen from time to time, lol, now that I realized two hours have passed but I've done none of my own work.

Thanks for the distraction though. I was going to go to the Pub with friends, but sometimes I really need to reassess what I do with my evenings.

Wait, so did you read the essay on monoglot standard? If not, you missed out.

OP, they're obviously literate. But they make mistakes. By asking if they're "literate," you've made either a writing error as bad as they, or you've done something advertent that is much worse.
