Here is a more expanded sizing grid, if that helps you any. Also, no need to be a stranger since you're local and all

Now I am even more confused. My unwashed and completely stretched out jeans are shy of 19" across the waist. Based on the internet measurements of these jeans new that's 3" of stretch. Can that be possible?

My big john black tapered had minimal stretch in the waist. I'd hesitate to say even 1/2 inch, but I've had them for about three years now, couldn't say for sure. Never washed.

I imagine this will not come as a surprise, but denim stretch varies wildly based on the original waistband size vs. the person's waist. One can stretch a denim multiple inches if buying a waistband size smaller than one's natural waist. Getting a size that doesn't fit as tight first, will result in less stretching. You cannot really compare the amount of stretching from one person to the other. If there's little stretching action, the waistband will stretch little.

I hope I'm not being too obvious here - just want to make sure that various stretch experiences are taken with a grain of salt

I remember back when I wore more denim I approached it with this kind of logic and found that I ended up disappointed in some cases because the waistband ended up too large. I think with lower rises sitting down puts a lot of strain on the waist band. I think I will just have to trust my stretch instinct and try some on if the good folks at NMWA would allow me to drop by at some point.

Today reminds me that I could use some more gloves too...

i find that a cold soak in the tub or a gentle cycle (w/ no spin) will tighten up an overstretched waist.
