These brands are typically found at department stores, which are generally the anchors of American malls. But I see your point about "celebrity trash jeans" and such.

Those types of jeans are not in favor here because the pre-washes/artificial fades are not desired. There is also the negative association the label itself gives you.

most people on this forum go for a more stealth wealth approach. sticking with timeless staples. a nice dark pair of japanese jeans that get better with age can be worn for years to come. where as your TR's with glittery back pockets and ridiculous washes are trendy at best.

It allows you to thumb your nose at the TR wearers.
As long as the rest of your persona isn't cheap (rest of your outfit, spending habits, etc), they won't think your jeans are from target. But they will not see branding on the ass, or not recognize it, and in turn will ask you "Oh what jeans are those?" and you'll be like, "PRPS" and they'll all be like "oh, what is that?" and you can give them the "are you ******* serious?" look and just walk away, and they'll go home and google it and
(1) realize your **** is twice as expensive as theirs
(2) be led to this forum or SuFu where they will realize the extent of their own inferiority

Didn't know you ran a successful donkey stable, whacked. Guess you learn something new every day.

Like LA Guy said, it's a hobby. The first year or so I got in this it was all about getting the absolute best quality jean and fading for the $ (and being able to brag about it); now that the honeymoon is somewhat over it has turned into the detail side of denim, it's history, bells and whistles, and manufacturing. I look at a pair of jeans now the way a gearhead looks underneath the hood of a car.

Don't most people blow out their stuff though?

Whenever I heard "mall jeans", I assumed it meant the jeans of outlet chains like A&F, Hollister, American Eagle, &c.

I guess it depends on where you live in the country. Where I live it's possible to get TR and SFAM, but they're only sold in specialty stores, not the mall. The anchors of our local shopping mall are Belk, Dilliards, and J.C. Penney.

This is awesome.

On a serious note, I have a few reasons for switching.

1) I prefer a bit of subtlety in my jeans. I'm not hardcore against any branding whatsoever- call me crazy, but I still like simple back pocket designs on meh jeans. Or, badass leather patches. But some of those brands go quite overboard.

2) True Religion jeans resonate with a certain group. While they are definitely not all douchebags, as a whole, I prefer the set wearing the japanese repros. The level of discourse on this site leads me to think its a rather more intelligent group then the average TR and backwards skate cap wearing douche.

3) Raw jeans give me something to think about when I'm bored in class, and give nice, "3d" and "contrasty" fades. I guess this qualifies it as a hobby.

As for finding the TR, R & R, and Diesels- where I live, almost every mall is anchored by atleast a Nordstrom. These Texan Nordstrom's seem to sell only TR-esque douchebag wear, and old man suits. And lots of square toed shoes.

I've seen the "premium" denim brands at Nordstrom and Bloomingdale's in the Chicago area, and I think Saks and Lord & Taylor have them, too. Many of the shopping malls around here will have at least one of these department stores in addition to a Macy's or some other store like Sears or JC Penny and such. So I've always seen them as mall jeans; high-end, but mall jeans nonetheless.

Really though, would you fork over $300 for a single piece of clothing that was totally uncool? I seriously doubt it.

Quality and comfort are def factors, but ultimately, clothing is about expression, and if others aren't going to appreciate, then why not go to JC Penny or Kohls?

Thanks for the reply!

At the end of the day, what mill the fabric comes from, what company made it, and how much it cost you doesn't mean anything. The only thing that matters is does it look good on you, suit your taste, and are you comfortable wearing it?

Most people here are just beating around the bush but lets be honest. Except for the neat fact that your jeans get to fade over time, there is nothing really better with selvedge over mall brands. There are some days when I go to parties that I seriously regret wearing selvedge jeans. I can look around the room and a lot of people will have perfect fitting jeans that look completely socially acceptable, but my jeans, even though much more expensive and exclusive, are still being broken in and still look like crap for the next couple of weeks.

^ Here's a solution for you: get some better fitting (selvedge? SF-approved?) jeans. Selvedge jeans come in all sizes and shapes. This is not sufu where great fading jeans are shoved down your throat. You do have a choice.
