I pretty much always ship USPS priority myself.

it's terrible tracking. basically shows item was picked up, and at some point in the distant future might show it was delivered. to get slightly better tracking you need to send it registered mail, but like i said, priority + registered is almost the same as express and sometimes can be more expensive (just sent something to japan where this was the case). and this way it's as good as ups/fedex tracking because it's updated at every point along the way, and many countries have agreements with usps so you get guaranteed delivery dates or refund of your postage cost.

This is simply not true. I say this as someone who has received dozens if not hundreds of items via USPS priority and tracked most of them. It will give you item received, where the item is en route, where it went into customs, when it cleared customs, and then in Canada it becomes normal tracking as to where it is at any given time / when it went out for delivery. All of this is to the minute and updated daily. I have had Canada Post reroute Priority parcels on numerous occasions with no problems.

unsurprisingly it works fine for parcels sent to canada, but this is an exception and not the rule, friendly northern neighbour. customs tracking--as per the usps agents themselves--is very destination-dependent and travels in large shipping containers. express packages exchange hands and each time an update is sent. going to canada does not require long travels in a shipping container hence the adequate tracking.

Oh, I thought we were just talking about US -> Canada shipping. I've no idea how it works going elsewhere, obviously.

I was just wondering about US->Canada, but I'll keep the express info in mind for our European friends.
