Dear all,
Why have the traditional brands of raincoats (Aquascutum, Burberry and others) changed the style of their standard SB/DB raincoats from the soft, drapey cotton (gabardine?) with generous fits, creamy buttons, in a beautiful cold grey/green beiges (in the 70s/80s) to a stiff/rigid cloth, with short fit, dark brown/black buttons, in nasty yellowey/mustardy tones?

I always thought the late Duke of Edinburgh wore a raincoat particularly well, as did Gekko in Wall St (i think both wore Burberry) and both illustrate the kind of shade and drape i'm looking for. I've attached a few examples of the traditional look i want and of the modern look i can't stand.

There must surely be a brand that makes them like they used to, but i can't find...could members recommend? The closest shade i got to was by Mackintosh, but the fit wasn't good and the cloth very plasticky.

eBay is my usual go-to in such situations but I've been trying literally for years...but they all seem to be absolutely enormous - i'm all for a loose fit here, but did they not make any in a UK36/38/40? I can't find any!

i'd be very grateful for any recommendations for a traditional raincoat, SB or DB. many thanks indeed.

If you want the best, you can customize anything. Made in uk.
You wont find double ventile raincoats anywhere basically.

Shorter version, fully customizable and can change everything length ...
Vintage repros made from also best materials but also for him he has some old cloth that slowly dissapears. Single ventile.
Made in Italy

Burberry still makes what is more or less their traditional, cotton trench coat. The company calls it their Heritage line, but it's very similar to the trench coats sold decades ago.
