Was looking at C&J Hallam to buy. When I look online the brown shoe can look so different. It be a consistent brown, it can be an antiquing/burnishing to it. Any reason why they could look so different? they look new so not something that was conditioned.

One example -> https://www.styleforum.net/buyandse...k-brown-burnished-3x-worn.16374/#lg=1&slide=0

Another example -> https://www.brogue.ch/shop/crockett-jones-hallam-dark-brown/

The second looks way nicer. So what am I missing?

Polishing probably has a lot to do with it. As does lighting. Brown is one of those colours that really begins to develop an interesting patina from wear and polish very quickly, and moreover, is somewhat more inconsistent than other colours because that specific shade of brown is always going to be somewhat unique.

Some makers are also highly inconsistent. One thing we dont discuss in polite company is how the hell for US$1500 Edward Green's "dark oak" has been so wildly consistent over the years.

It bounced from a dark brown to a "tell us when the dark kicks in" a few years ago, and I think it may have reverted back... maybe.
