If you're in or around DC, get your tail over to the Filene's on Connecticut Ave or at Mazza Gallerie.  They just got a huge shipment of stuff from Richards and Mitchells of Connecticut --  where captains of industry shop for Borrelli, Brioni, Edward Green, etc.

Unfortunately, the discounts aren't quite as huge as in recent sales of Barney's and Bergdorf's stuff.  Still very good though.  I picked up a pair of super 120s Incotex Sartiorale slacks ($169 marked down from $435); a Borrelli shirt ($129 marked down from $295); and a stunning blue and black Charvet tie ($49 marked down from $135).

They've got hundreds and hundreds (seriously.) of Brioni items.  More Brioni than anything else -- everything from suits to blazers to shirts to sweaters to scarves to ties.  (Example:  $3800 Brioni suit marked down to $1400 -- big discount, but still expensive.)  There was a pair of silk and cashmere Brioni slacks for $399 marked down from $1200 -- I had to try them on -- amazing.  Too expensive....  Next in terms of quantity is Zegna.  Some very nice Zegna suits, I thought.  A bunch of Luciano Barbera too (I nearly bought a pair of LB slacks but they were $199 marked down from $475 -- still too pricey.).  A few Incotex slacks, mostly in larger sizes (lots in size 40, for example).  A small amount of Borrelli shirts and Lorenzini shirts.  Lots of Armani everything -- shirts, suits, ties, slacks.  All of it Armani Collection.  $100 Armani ties are just $29.  A small amount of Loro Piana too, from Horsey jackets (tempting at $499 marked down from $1300) to shirts to sweaters.  Then, there's the mountain of Mitchell's label stuff, which is very high quality in itself.

I checked the hoard - nice stuff indeed.

Lots of suits on offer from Brioni in all sizes (38R through to 48L), plenty of Hickey Freeman as well. Discounts are not very deep.

Also lots of nice leather from Brioni, but at $1200-1400 still not cheap for a jacket. I walked out with a casual quilted Brioni jacket in tan for a reasonable price, but may yet return it...

There were tons of Brioni and Armani Collezione at the Boston location as well as a small selection of shoes and accessories. Really great quality stuff, but the suits and the sportswear, And I saw a raglan sleeve zip up that I thought was pretty nice, but in general, the sportswear was old man style - i.e. good for Jack Palance, not so good for anyone under 40, maybe 50.

They also had at least one pair of Edward Greens (nice, but not at all my style - good workmanship, but not very sleek.) and some Tods driving loafers - God, please destroy all those things. I got a pair of Prada laceups for $79, marked down incorrectly (regular price $150? The other pairs of different sizes said regular price $350, but the box actually said $425). I pointed this out, but they gave me the price anyway. An elongated, slightly squared off shovel toe. Very nice for those days I am actually forced to ditch my sneakers because there is a "dress code." Gentlemen, is there any shoe company that will make terrific handmade shoes, but style them a little less for the boardroom or country house, and more for the clubs? It would be great to see, say, a Prada/Lattanzi collaboration. I guess there is already a Jil Sander/Lattanzi collaboration, but why can't there be something more?

Sadly, the White Plains store here in NY has none of the mentioned. A bunch of older Zegna and Oxford suits on sale for $800. I overheard a conversation between the manager and what I assume was a higher up that if it doesn't sell this week it's gone for good. I wonder if Richards being only 10 miles away has something to do with the clothing they get?

The Filene's suit event is also going on.

The Basement on Conn Ave also had a decent selection of Corneliani suits, although the discounted price is only $600. The Brioni stuff is still way overpriced IMHO.

As for pricing, it will only be a matter of a month or so I'd guess before all of this Richards/Mitchells stuff gets discounted -- a Labor Day sale perhaps. I'd guess the first round will be a 25% off sale. I'd bet that, of the Brioni, etc. items still on the rack at that time will be the most expensive and "hard to place" stuff -- the jackets that are $4000 reduced to $1400, for example. Brioni suits are so popular, as with Zegna, I think they'll all be sold pretty quickly - -probably before the markdowns come.

By the way, I think the summer sale items from Barney's and Bergdorf's should be coming through one of these days too.

FYI--I swung by the Filene's on 14th Street in DC today. Nothing there, other than a bunch of junk -- Chaps, Fumigalli's, Geoffrey Beene. The "nicest" men's clothing item in the store was a Jhane Barnes sportcoat for $100.

14th street really is a backwater. On some Saturdays I'll actually shuttle b/w Friendship Heights and Conn Ave, but 14th Street is not worth the trip. Â Now that's not to say I won't pop my head in if I'm in the area...

I actually found a great Battistoni shirt at the 14th Street store the last time they got in a load of stuff from Barney's. I haven't noticed a big difference between the 14th Street and Friendship Heights stores, although the Conn. Ave. location definitely seems to be the best.
