Nice find.  Very cool piece of Rolex history with a rather short production run.  The white dial version (which is famous for turning cream color) is talked about far more often as it has more differences in appearance compared to a white dial successor 16570.  In addition to the different bezel engravings the white dial 16550 had white gold hands and hour markers.  On the 16570 the hands and hour markers were outlined in black for greater contrast, and its production run was much longer.  Only the bezel of the black 16550 seems visually different from the black dial 16570.  Still great find and I would definitely prefer a black 16550 to a cream/white 16550.  Again great find, enjoy it!

Thank you, it's my first vintage Rolex and I'm already looking for another. As collectable as it is, the creme dialed 16550 didn't speak to me, I didn't like the lack of contrast between the white gold markers and dial.

I've never been a fan of the cream dial 16550, so I think you made a great choice. Apparently, many people didn't like the lack of contrast between white gold markers and the dial, so it changed on the next model. But its those quirky things that have made it collectible, even if its not your taste or mine. Congrats again on a great find!

I'm as much of an impulse buyer as anyone but this one is going to take a little time! :) Most likely toward the end of the year.

good luck man. Theyre great watches...this is my second. I had been tossing the idea around of a higher end watch than what i currently had....I really didnt anticipate leaving with it because i take FOREVER to decide on a purchase. I justified it because I had to get rid of my sports car when the baby came. A fella has to have his toys. No buyers remorse though...its really nearly impossible to go wrong with them. Cant wait to see it on your wrist!

Its kinda the end of the year already, no?

derk - Smart move using that money while the baby is still new. They tend to get more expensive as the years go by. Both the watches and the kids.

Nice BP - we don't see many around here. Your thoughts on it compared to other higher end brands? Love to hear thoughts from an owner..

I don't own any gold watches (yet), but when I do, I will definitely have it on a brown croc. Just love that warm color combo
