If you remember from the last days of the old thread I had posted about Chrono24 deal that I had lost my patience with. One of the reasons I had lost patience with it was the simple fact that the watch I wanted was available in the US for a better price and I still didn't have a clear cut idea of when the original seller would get it together. Thankfully everybody agreed that it was for the best to cancel the transaction and the next day I was able to buy something I've been in love with for a long time, a Glashuette Original Seventies. The watch I was going to buy was on the rubber strap for $700 more than this one on the bracelet. I actually plan to wear it on the rubber quite a bit and conveniently, the rubber strap + deployant clasp happen to cost right around $700, so its basically like I got the bracelet thrown in for free. Not a huge fan of dates (or "day-counters" as sometimes referred to on TWAT), but if you're going to have a date, having one of the best implementations of a grand date is a great way to go.

I really do love this watch and the way it wears, its a bit chunkier than something like a Royal Oak, but the sapphire caseback is curved to lay nicely across the wrist. A lot of manufacturers could learn a thing or two about bracelet micro adjustments from GO. As a steel sports watch in the Rolex, Royal Oak type of vein, I think its an interesting alternative, but the price of it new just seems out of wack to me. As much as I love the watch, there is no way I would ever have considered paying the $9.5k to 10.5k they ask for them new. Even the standard grey market price seems makes for a strange value proposition. I'm not afraid of paying close to retail for something if I really like it, but I couldn't wrap my head around the normal pricing for this.

That said, I'm completely thrilled I scored one at the right price. It makes a nice everyday companion for my more casual Panerai and my more formal Nomos and appeals to me quite a bit more than the Blue 39mm Oyster Perpetual that it is essentially replacing. Happy to say that I don't have any other watches on my radar right now, will be interested to see how long this lasts.

Congratulations on the Seventies. I'm not a big GO fan, but both the Seventies and Sixties definitely have the "feel" down in my opinion. In fact it's interesting that they didn't do some sort of Mad Men collaboration, though the show using original watches was surely a much better idea and I think it'd be tough to top the Mad Men Reverso. Still I think GO has found a niche where they're doing a "tribute" watch if you will that is notably different than the other tribute watches being done elsewhere.

Also, nice little collection you have. Very different than a lot of other collections I've seen out there.

I think I've found my One Watch. I have no desire to wear any of my others anymore (not that I really have an extensive collection), and can't really think of finding another one in the future to supplant it.

I've become such a big Lange fan and I've never even seen one in the flesh. I can definitely see how a Lange could be a "One Watch" and that's coming from someone who loves the 1815 (along with a few other Langes). Congratulations!

Same here. Have for years.

I narrowed my next purchase to these two very different options:


Rolex Oyster Perpetual - I like really like its simple, elegant design. Feels rugged and its color makes it easy to go with many outfits. Being 39mm feels a tad small.



IWC Portuguese - I just find this watch stunning. I like the 41mm size and the blue leather strap, but feel it might not be as "timeless" as the Rolex.



Which one would you pick and why? For context, I am in my late 20's, working on wall street and this would be my first and only expensive watch. I'm wondering if I could wear each:

1) At the office (with navy/charcoal suits)
2) Casually with jeans a shirt
3) With a tux

I think Rolex gets too much fanfare and that other watchmakers/watches don't get their due as a result, but I'd have to say go with the Rolex here and it's an easy choice. Not a big fan of that IWC either way (thought I agree with Dino's thoughts on some of their watches from the 90s), but that aside for how you're looking to wear the watch I would think the Rolex fits the bill more.

As for the hard and fast rules of wear, I think you'll find that the percentage of folks who get that is quite small. Not so much in your circles as in mine I'm sure, but still I would think that would be the case to some extent. I would add though that while neither watch suits a tux in my opinion, if you were to add a nice alligator leather strap to the Rolex you could make it work well at the office. I personally prefer a dark navy blue which would work well with that watch and with your suits.

Just wondering how Baume & Mercier made the cut and Lange didn't for the thread title.

While I hadn't noticed and don't think it's overly important, the thread title does beg the question.

Thanks for the complement. In general whether its bass guitars or watches, I've always been drawn to things that are a little bit different, even if its simply an uncommon version of a common brand like Panerai. I'm mainly drawn to watches that are fairly austere while having at least one aspect that's a little off the beaten path.

I agree. I deliberately mentioned top-selling luxury brands - a lot of them - in the FAQ. That, and of course the hundreds of mentions in posts, I would have thought should cover the search engine needs. Apart from looking a bit tacky, I think this title sends the opposite of the message that supposedly made the FAQ so important: that this is a thread to discuss any watches, and not a brand-whoring exclusive vanity parade. Bah.

This is my TT1931 Rouge. JC Randell has sadly retired now - I never managed to get another Reverso engraved for my wife, which will probably be one of my bigger horological regrets going forward.

Thanks for all the JlC Reverso posts. Love them, very stylish and still classical. I was just looking at a few prior to visiting SF, so your timing is perfect.
