Thanks. "It is so choice." ~Ferris Bueller
It really IS a pretty hot color. Turns a lot of heads ifyaknowwhatimean.
Perhaps and I agree with you about the bullet proof diesels although I have never owned one. I know lots of guys who do, however and that's good enough for me.
Thanks. I love it and it is old enough to be fairly simple to work on. When the spirit moves me.
I'm guessing that what you're considering is actually a 450SL. The big issue with that year is the catalytic converter location under the hood. The heat it puts out tends to bake the car's wiring to crispy critters. Find a late model 560 under $10K (and maybe even around $5K if you're lucky) and enjoy what is arguably the best of the breed. Just be ready to fillerup with premium!
Doctors do seem to have a lot of disposable income and are quite willing to dispose of it.
Thanks for all the comments, guys. You kept me busy for over an hour!
That....is awesome....looks really nice too!!

+1. My parents bought an '86 powder blue / dark blue interior SL years ago and have been shoveling money into it ever since. I used to use it during the summers in college and infuriate them by calling it "my car" Maybe someday I'll buy it off them so I can pour oodles of money into it. But not yet.
Oh, and . Both because that color is AWESOME and because YOURS WAS FREE!....

When I was a senior in college I bought an 8 year old 1974 240D from a TWA pilot in Kansas City. As you mathematically-inclined types have deduced, I am an older guy. It had 75,000 miles on it. I sold it 3 years later with 125,000 miles on it. Maintenance was oil & filter, a battery, and a new exhaust system. I bought that car for $6200 and sold it for $6400.
I drove that car when I was a Lieutenant in the Marine Corps. One of my buddies asked "Smitty, how can you afford a Mercedes?" I just laughed. He had leathered up RX-7 which he bought new for about $16,000.
Mercedes used to make solid, simple, and even somewhat spartan vehicles which would run forever. The diesel engines they made in the 70's and 80's were as good as anything ever on the road. Now, they make overly complex overpriced luxury vehicles. IMO they have lost their way.

Awesome! But you are right, a free used luxury car is never free. I know from experience (but never was lucky enough to get one free - I paid up for them!). SteveSmith is right, Pre 1983-ish BMWs and Mercedes were very simple to maintain and work on. Now they are computerized monstrosities. If you have an electrical problem in, say a 1989 BMW 7-series, expect to pay $500+ just to figure out what's causing it.

dig, thanks for this info....im looking at a cream 1976 400SL right now as a weekend toy. Great cosmetic shape, but im leery on repairs. being a cheap bastard, i think i need to pass hahaha.

Gotta get my wife a job as a medical secretary.

Perhaps I confused you with someone else. I dont remember seeing that pic you are talking of
DigMeNow, maybe? He found a cardigan at Macy's not long ago (I think - I'm not a stalker) and posted the pic on (I believe) this board (or, the 'Jeans with a Tie?' board).
*wonders now if Dig is a furry, hence the confusion*
