I hope all is well with the Alden family! Been off work for the remainder of my paternity leave with my now 8 month old daughter. Not much dressing up for me these days! Every day is a blessing and I’m constantly amazed at babies and their development.

Life’s been pretty good! Went shopping with Mrs. Savvy so I had baby duty while I waited for her. Modified Color 8 for the day.

Hey! Those aren’t Indy boots!
Indeed...B+M Depano Snuff Suede Tankers on Trubalance Last....so I consider them as Indy boots!
Only the laces are the Red Wing Taslan Laces.

So much more comfortable with the new JR soles/heels. Enjoy the long weekend gents.

More comfortable than the original soles & heels?

No, and I’m glad you asked as it gives me the he chance to clarify. The previous owner had the soles/welt swapped out to antique. The shoe cobbler (who I won’t name) did his typical shoddy work and added some really cheap soles. They were like walking on rocks in bare feet. In terms of comfort, I find Alden and JR comparable. No real reason for picking JR on these.

I’m sure this has been asked 1000x… do you generally take Barrie and Van in the same size? 10D Barrie longwings fit me like a custom shoe. Should I take 10D Van LHS also?

Any American retailers with a makeup similar to this one from Frans Boone?
  • Cordovan
  • Blucher
  • Barrie last
  • Crepe sole
Apart from the crepe sole there are several retailers with something similar, but for whatever reason crepe seems to have fallen out of fashion.

I’ve seen a color 8 Longwing on crepe recently. Not sure that’s what you’re looking for though.

I wear the same size in both, but it depends on how you plan to wear them. I'll wear Van loafers with thin socks, whereas with Barrie I'll typically wear with thicker socks. With the same pair of socks the Van will be noticeably more snug.

If it's helpful, here's a 9D Barrie directly next to a 9D Van so you can get a sense of their respective size and shape. Both are pressed up against the edge of the carpet. The Barrie is about a half-inch longer, but that's in part because the Barrie has greater rear overhang.

It’s really a good question and I will tell you I spent my first 5-6 years in this game sizing Van TTS (1/2 up from Barrie). About a year ago I had the chance for a grail (for me), a Ravello LHS’s in my Barrie size. Took the chance on the assumption that if they didn’t work, I could either wear them sockless or flip. Been a match made in heaven and I have since converted all my Van to my Barrie size.

Feet are tricky but for me, Van=Barrie.
