Do you not see that the screens close to prevent that? And that there are glass doors between the house and porch? Or are we suggesting that photo shoots are reality? If there were stairs without some sort of baby gate shown in the photos, would you assume that's how they actually live?

Sure, there are screens.

However, if I had a toddler or young child and I was building a house next to a steep drop, I'd make sure that I built a balustrade around the edge of the verandah/deck.

Otherwise, they're either going to have to keep the screens closed the whole time, or keep an eye on their child all the time just in case they get too close to the edge and topple over.

Love the vertically slatted screens, and the modest use of stone blocks. Little bit of stone goes a long way imo.

This looks fun.

The Vancouver Art Gallery on Tuesday unveiled Herzog & de Meuron’s conceptual design for its new museum building in downtown Vancouver. The 310,000-square-foot building features more than 85,000 square feet of exhibition space—more than double the museum’s current size — and a new education center with a 350-seat auditorium, workshops and a resource center for research, library services and artist archives.

The Swiss-based firm Herzog & de Meuron, a recipient of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, is perhaps best known for Beijing’s 2008 Olympics stadium (also known as the Bird’s Nest) and the conversion of the Bankside power plant into the Tate Modern in London in 2000.

The architects’ museum projects also include the expansion of the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis in 2005; the de Young Museum in San Francisco in 2005; the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill, N.Y., in 2012 and the Pérez Art Museum Miami in December 2013.

“Over the past 15 years, our collection has grown by more than 250 percent, attendance has increased 350 percent and membership has increased by 300 percent,” Kathleen Bartels, the gallery’s director, said in a statement. “The conceptual design for the downtown building responds brilliantly and efficiently to the changing needs of our institution and our community.”

The design calls for the building to be built in wood, including its structural frame. Canada's British Columbia is a timber-rich region, and tall wooden buildings are becoming more common there.

"The project for the new Vancouver Art Gallery has a civic dimension that can contribute to the life and identity of the city, in which many artists of international reputation live and work," said Christine Binswanger, partner in charge for the gallery project at Herzog & de Meuron. "It will be a powerful statement to construct this large building out of wood, a material with a long tradition in British Columbia."

Kuala Lumpur is one of the hottest, muggiest cities I've ever visited. With my Anglo genes, I'd likely die of a skin rash within a week of living in an open air mansion like that.

No thanks.
