Re: Calatrava's WTC design: The finish is terrible, but that's due to the fact they they didn't properly sandblast the concrete before painting it. From what I remember reading, the city balked at the cost after the design specified a better finish and they ended up cutting corners in prepping the surface, so I wouldn't necessarily blame Calatrava for an ugly design, but rather a poor effort to make the design cost-effective. If the design itself is poor, it's due to how unpractical stubborn its formal aspirations were, which seems like fair criticism given his recent track record. I really want to like the guy, because he's certainly a genius in many ways, but he needs a co-pilot that can help deliver his genius sensibly, and it appears he lacks that right now.

Re: The Shard: Gorgeous.

Re: Rogers' Central St. Giles: Awful awful awful

Re: Rogers' Bankside Development in London: Pretty crappy looking.

For once I agree with everything you've said with no qualifiers. How's business in Nyc? We're seeing a boom reminiscent of the early '00s. Frustratingly total lack of qualified talent out there to fuel the growth.

Has anyone seen pictures of the late Charlton Heston's house?

Designed in 1959 by William S. Beckett, it looks very nice and is a great example of the architectural style of the times:

There are lots of other photos out there, too, if you care to look. The house is listed for sale for about US$12.5 million.

^

I saw that the other day on Curbed:LA and it didn't strike me as the kind of place Heston would live. Would've thought something more traditional for Moses.

^^ I seem to remember the first pic as the spot where a trucker capped doco maker bailed Heston up about Columbine. ... i felt sorry for both of them.

Bosco Verticale was supposed to look like that as well, but ended up like this. With it being the same developer, I predict is ending up look the same way.
