Hahah, exactly. The last seats I was in gave me a view of where the conductor went, and it was so comical that he just went out there for a second as if he was thinking, "they're gonna clap when I come back!!" ~ H

Most orchestras only allow three rounds of applause. Usually after the third round (unless it's something very special, like a liked MD's last concert) the conductor takes the concertmaster or the concertmaster leaves the stage to queue the end of the applause. This stems from the orchestra not wanting to pay overtime.

Two Philly regulars Eschenbach & Milanov both where the nehru collared jacket. Sir Roger Norrington has an interesting seemingly bespoke jacket with many interesting buttons on the front. It doesn't fit him that well, but it's different.

From a musician's standpoint, having the conductor wear a tux makes it easier to see the baton with the white cuff... that is, if we want to look.

As an aside, nigel kennedy makes me want to throw up... especially his 4 seasons. Just the thought of it makes me sick.

As a former symphony musician, orchestras need to evolve. Conductors long before Von Karajan were changing things up.

Toscanini often wore an "alpaca" coat at performances.
