Most similar positions are JETs but I'm privately contracted. My position used to be a JET, but the fact that they couldn't interview directly and got a couple less than steller employees was a turnoff to the program.
Which department of gov do you work in? From what I've heard, gov positions are some of the most highly coveted in Japan (within an already ridiculously competive system). I've never heard of foreigners doing that. (?)
I'm a contract employee, not a fulltime gov't employee. I work for the Civil Exchange section of a metropolitan area doing translation, interpretation, and event planning. Basically means that I work less hours, have more vacation hours, and get paid more than my coworkers, but cannot get raises or promotions, and can be fired more easily
