Senator's clothing

Hey. I am new to the board and this is my first post. I was actually wondering, where do all the Senators and Congressmen in Washington go to get their suits and shirts? I know of the few tailors in DC like Georges De Paris and William Fields but, I was wondering if there is another prominent tailor that the politicians go to? Also, if anyone knows, where does Sanford Weil (Chairman of Citigroup) go in New York? Thank you for any input.

Politicians aren't always the best dressers. I read a quote by Georges de Paris that he gets his business from the lobbyists - most of the politicians are too cheap. I know someone from James in Tyson's Corner said the Chuck Hagel buys Canali suits from them. On a side note, this months Washingtonian named the best dressed members of Congress. I remember Congressman David Dreier, Senators Gordan Smith and Orrin Hatch, and a few others won. Might try to find where they get their clothes.

The best-dressed men are the ones who look as though they haven't tried too hard even if they have.

One such specimen is Rep. David Dreier (R-Calif.). For years, whenever the subject of men's fashion arose on the Hill, I was told by his male colleagues, "Talk to David Dreier."

So I caught up with him on a recent morning in the Speaker's Lobby. He was walking briskly down the carpeted hallway in a very clean and crisp light-beige suit. I had to run a little to catch him. Finally, he stopped for a few moments on a cream-colored marble staircase to discuss the origins of his fashion sense, which, by the way, he doesn't think he has. Perfectly gracious about his own attire, he said he doesn't particularly think he's well-dressed. "It's a sad commentary," he said, if he's the basis of a fashion piece.

But what else would you expect to hear from a man whose choice of attire is understated and proper? Certainly no declaration that, yes, he looks ravishing in beige and gray pinstripes.

Others, however, think Dreier is a snappy dresser. He was among Washingtonian's best-dressed lawmakers in 2002, as were fashion goddess Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and the never camera-shy Rep. Mark Foley (R-Fla.). "He's quite the fashion plate," said a Capitol Police officer who sees him often in the hallways. Said another, "I would say it's the proximity to Rodeo Drive."

But really, how foolish. His dress has nothing to do with his association to movie stars such as Bo Derek, whom he once dated, and everything to do with how he was raised.

"My father always thought I dressed slovenly," said Dreier. "He was a drill sergeant in the Marines. He instilled in me the notion of being neat and clean."

And neat and clean he is, although he speaks about his clothing as though he doesn't care where he buys it. His favorite places to shop include Brooks Brothers, Nordstrom's and tailors "wherever I can find them."

I'm not buying his carefree attitude.

I know of few politicians who dress with anything approaching style. Most seem to go out of their way to look frumpy - they seem to think it sits better with their constituents. There are several members of that oft-despised profession called "lobbying" who dress far better than the politicos they are paid to influence. Roger Stone, who seems rather a snake, does dress quite well. I saw a panel discussion on CNN once and Stone was wearing a peaked lapel SB with a DB vest - and a watch chain draped across the "weskit". At one time he used Flusser for suits, but I don't know now.

Thank you all for the quick replies. Yes, I am aware of the fact that polticians generally suck at dressing themselves but, I still was interested in finding out where they buy their clothing. Thank you again.

The smart ones shop when they are back at home in their own districts and generally get good deals there. Why drop money at a store whose owner does not vote in your election.

Last year we ran into Governor Keating shopping at the Harold's at 50 Penn Place in Oklahoma City.

FWIW - with no cameras on and just shopping with his wife on a Sunday afternoon he was incredibly nice and approachable - not in a kissing babies and shaking hands kind of way but in a genuine, down to Earth kind of way.

Harold's isn't Wilkes or Neiman's but a perfect place for a politician - very all-american with a decidedly Ralph Lauren feel.

Roger Stone is one of the great dark princes of modern politics-- the real-life crypto-political Reilly ace of spies. No matter what party you support it's breathtaking just to read about some of the stunts he has engineered. He is also, as someone has referenced, a good looking guy with extravagant tastes in clothes, wives, and food.

It still looks that way. Politicians are notoriously bad dressers, I wonder if the original poster was trying to model thier dress?

Catch the latest photo of Kerry saluting on the Drudgereport. You can readily tell the two button cuff of the T&A shirt, but FIVE buttons on his suit coat cuff?? Didn't RLPL do some of that a few years ago?

Corneliani (or maybe Trend Corneliani) has done some of those in the past year or two. I guess if you're going to wear those three button barrel cuffs, you might as well keep the odd numbers as a theme.

5 button suit cuffs have been a trademark of Gucci jackets for the last few seasons. I have a real hard time picturing Kerry wearing Gucci, so I'd bet he's wearing something else, but that's the first thing that comes to my mind when I see 5 buttons on a suit sleeve.
