I think so. I've seen a lot of people wearing knit caps with suits, just like these men in the pictures, and they look(ed) great.
But badly. Italians love the 'British' look and by and large pull it off very well. You see lots of tweed, cord, Barbour, Belstaff (of course), Burberry, brown suede chukkas etc etc. I could sit in Rome and watch the world go by forever.
