I wouldn't go as far as to say that it's bad. I just think it could be better.

This is an outfit on Huntsman's Instagram that hews closer to the so-called "rules." I think this outfit looks better for it.

Are you intentionally evading my request for proof that I posted the photos you linked? Because I only remember the last two, and if you found the others from somewhere then it shouldn't be difficult to show us (and to put them in proper context).

When I see those photos, I see what tailors, at least in Vegas, are putting out. One of the few custom clothes shops in town, Stitched, have these examples on their website.

The Founder

Keeping in mind that It's Vegas, Baby, this is what people who presumably know about clothing are pushing. Some of it I like, others not so much, but it seems similar to the latter set of photos you posted.

There is a lot of terrible stuff here. Mostly the Founder reminds me or Charles Vane from Black Sails. ZachMcGowanCaptainCharlesVane2.jpg

It's true. But at the same time, 1) This isn't some department store selling it, it's nearly as close to an actual tailor as exists in town (there's one other I've found, and use), 2) real people seem to wear this sort of thing, as at least some lawyers have worn similar stuff in court, and 3) with those kinds of examples, it's hard to tell if that's what CM is (in the "tailored" not "historic" sense) or if the people in town who are supposed to be experts are just super wrong. In some ways I envy NYC and LA for actual tailoring scenes. I'd expect a lot of folks here would just say "Go to Men's Warehouse" in this circumstance, if no other.

Los Angeles is not that far from Las Vegas! No need to be constrained to this pirate-ware.

The jacket looks odd to me. It looks like the person is wearing a worsted herringbone suit jacket for a sport coat.

Many of the outfits you've posted here strike me as very unnatural for anyone in any environment and at any age. I don't know how else to describe your taste, except that it reminds me of Pinterest boards run by young girls. There's something very twee about the look. The combinations and cuts also seem totally unmoored.

I've said on here that I think people can be informed by the past without necessarily being slaves to it. Although, I personally don't have a problem with people dressing up in more historically accurate outfits. I just don't think it's necessary to look good in CM.

For example, I think these outfits look great, and they represent the Golden Age of CM.

If you live in certain cities or work in certain environments, then you may find it difficult to wear a tie or suit.

I think this works as a very casual version of CM, and can be worn when getting lunch with a friend.

View attachment 1668630 View attachment 1668631 View attachment 1668634

In the right professional environment, I also think you can wear things such as this (you can adjust things on the margins, such as losing the pocket square or tie. It's about context).

View attachment 1668633 View attachment 1668636 View attachment 1668637

I also think people can wear tailoring for fun. This can be as casual as a linen suit with sneakers

View attachment 1668638

A cotton suit

View attachment 1668639 View attachment 1668641

A "sleazy" suit

View attachment 1668640

Or even just a conservative suit that you wear for pleasure.

View attachment 1668642

All those outfits feel like they have a connection to the past and speak a common language. They also look more natural to me in modern environments.

Whereas I think these outfits look terrible. The proportions, cut, combinations, etc have no connection with the past. And they look even less natural to me in modern environments. I can't imagine what social circle you'd have to have where this looks natural or good, unless you hang out with Conor McGregor.

If someone looks at the last set of photos and feels they want to look like that, and they feel the photos I've posted make men look "old," then of course that's their preference. There's no real way to argue preferences. But if someone looks at the photos I favor, I think it helps to understand the past to get to that point.

so you think the top 2 photos look good, but the bottom one looks bad?

wow

good examples

It's amazing to me that it's possible for DWW simply to lie about someone's tastes and get away with it. So now we can just post random photos and misrepresent people?

In that case, I submit that this is his stylistic preference, with about the same amount of proof (that is to say, none at all):

I haven't witnessed anyone looking out of place in sports coats in real life, until I realized that DWW and others were simply not accustomed to more formal situations or didn't have as much use for their tailored clothes.

And that would be perfectly fine, were it not for the strange attempts to convince everyone else that this aesthetic preference, borne of necessity, should impact the lives of others who never really find themselves out of place among their social set.

Ah, would that we were so blessed as to be acquainted with the glamorous life of the upper crust of Toronto, Ontario.

That's the sad part. Toronto is hardly the fashion capital of the world.

A LOT more.

Never mind the banal combinations: the first photo has atrocious shoulders and that god-awful double button collar; the second makes the wearer look like he has huge hips, with a shrunken jacket. He looks like a teacher who just lost his contract.

absolutely love that outfit. Take the tie off and it’s still good. Works in so many environments too, very versatile. Would not be my go to as I prefer a suit, but I like it a lot.

put a pair of loafers in him and I think it becomes only ok. Maybe some dressier loafers with a sleek style would work but the ones you see mainly posted here would take that outfit down a notch.

I agree that the basic look is versatile. I’d just prefer a sport coat that looks less like an orphaned suit jacket.

I also think the outfit is smart enough that oxfords work, even fairly sleek ones. I’d prefer brown though.

I had a discussion with some friends who like CM about the watches with outfit issue a week or so ago.

I was at a BT wedding and saw a lot of guys wearing giant sport watches. If you watch Casino Royale and see Daniel Craig wearing this

With a tuxedo - I guess you might think that's a good look.

But this is a nonsense watch with a tuxedo. It is completely out of context with the outfit.
Well, it’s there because Omega paid millions to outbid Rolex as the Bond watch. Omega was even mentioned in the script.

Oh I know. It's quite explicit.
"Rolex?"
"Omega."
"Beautiful."

Omega acrually took over during rhe Brosnan Bonds. It's all of course product placement.

I dont really think the 39mm Rolex Sub Connery wore was a particular good watch with a tux either, but its a better choice than the 41mm, and much thicker, Seamaster.

I believe the story is that producer Cubby Broccoli was on set and let Connery use his Sub for Dr. No. Thus are legends born.

If I want to commit adultery and give up the throne of the United Kingdom, I'll go with the canvas sneakers.

No, but seriously: I think that outfit would've looked better sans the sneakers.

Even if, @dieworkwear there is a blue pair of shoes worn with white laces. Admittedly, a blue pair of canvas sneakers, not blue suede.
