I've never had much issue with Continental in the past and flew the new merged United out of Newark 6 months ago with no issues on the ground or in the air.

I've heard good things about Virgin America.

How in the hell does that happen in first? Every time I've flown business on United the stewardesses are always happy to be their and thus, nice.

the ONE time i've had had a notably good experience in united was with the OLDEST attendant... she looked like she was pushing 60

the difference in experience starts from the ground up. walk into an asiana, or nippon lounge, and all the attendants (all young, attractive) jump up to attention and greet you.
the united matrons barely gives you a glance as she takes your bp/card.
lufthansa, for example, drove me directly to the plane in a porsche cayenne.
thai airlines will escort you on a buggy to the gate.
united.... depends on the lounge, whether theyre full, etc, will SOMETIMES announce the boarding of your flight

other carriers: welcome mr [xxx], let me show you to your seat. my name is [xxx] i am your purser/service manager/whatever for today. would you like to have a drink? (champagne please)
united: nobody gives a ****. 10 minutes after sitting down: "OJ or water?" (or some swill champagne)

i think fewer than 50% of my flights in united C i've been addressed by my name, at any point of the journey. little **** like that doesnt matter per se, but it exemplifies the level of service for the rest of the flight

North American carriers are simply a choice of who's less worse. Being in Toronto, I fly Air Canada although I sometimes choose United because they have more amenable flight times (such as YYZ-ORD). But ironically, I hear people are leaving AC to go to UA and redeeming their miles back with Star Alliance.

Alaska comes to the rescue. Flew to LA last weekend and the nice steward put the armrest, on the aisle, up when I got up. When we were about to land he said, must go down and didn't realize my sport coat was in the way. Ripped the fabric all the way thru the lining. Needs a reweave, not cheap, but it's a nice jacket. Talk to AA customer service after asking the stewardess to give me a written form of some kind on exiting the aircraft. After a few days, they called me and said, it's our fault, get it fixed and we'll pay for it. Won't be good as new, but better than ripped. Bravo Alaska. United never would have done this, no f-ing way.
