The absolute worst customer service in the industry. Most US carriers are less than great, but a recent experience with United has broken the camel's back. A while ago, I had some issues with a seat on a United flight and received a certificate to use on future travel. Unfortunately, due to illness, I was unable to use it. So, I contacted United, spoke to a supervisor and was told they would reissue the certificate. Great right? Wrong! No email, snail mail, nada, zippo. I called them today and after waiting the appropriate long time on hold, they said they could not find any evidence of the promised certificate and that there was nothing they could do. Well, I told them there was something I could do. Tell everyone, who will listen, how crappy United's customer care is and to never fly United again, unless absolutely necessary. There you have it. May their karma run over their dogma. Feel free to continue stories of United's less than stellar service, maybe, don't bet the ranch, something will come of it. I feel better already!

So you had some "issues with a seat" and they gave you a gift certificate?

    Damn, not bad!

It was more than issues, they lost my reso and my seat in econ+ which I paid for and wouldn't honor., etc, etc. Let them go bankrupt again and not bail the assholes out.

While it is poor customer service, I would hardly say it is reason to not fly the airline. In fact, United is probably one of the better domestic carriers.

This is far from the first issue I'd had with United. It really comes down to not caring about the customer. They really don't. And the phone people, don't get me started. Unfortunately, they merged with Continental, which was much better than United on many fronts. Now it's infected. I'd love to hear someone's story about good customer service with them. I have never had the pleasure. They lost a customer, and I will continue to tell everyone I know to not fly with them. Bad will is a powerful thing, I would never want my business to have it.

It's not so much United as it is any US-based airline. I've flown on all major US airlines and I have never once had a flight depart on time with them. And don't even get me started on their customer service. European airlines like KLM, British Airways and Luftansa blow any North American based airlines (including Canadian ones) out of the water as far as reliability and service is concerned.

I fly about 80k miles domestically per year. No airline is even in the vicinity of perfect but what industry is? As stand alone airlines, United and Continental were to better of the domestic airlines and Northwest was by far the worst.

Since the Delta/Northwest, Delta has become a very good airline. The jury is still out on the new United but I have not had any major problem with them.

I dont understand how United could lose an economy plus seat if youre holding an economy plus boarding pass.

I agree that US airlines are lacking compared to most European, Asian and Middle Eastern airlines in terms of service and ammenities however 9 times out of 10, it's not the airline that causes delays. I fly between Chicago and NYC regularly and it's either a weather issue or an air traffic issue.

Thus the complaint. I actually liked Continental. Perhaps they can help United out? Not holding my breath. Alaska is my preference, they actually care about their customers and want them to return. United can kiss my ass on the way out the door.

I stopped years ago, but on occasion I have no other choice if I want to fly direct to a city. Will be flying them this week.

Rode a tiny commuter flight out of O'Hare on one of those Bombardier jets on United last summer, every person on my flight lost their bag that day. I know because we all got nothing out of the carousel and then all lined up at the claims counter together. I guess they just sent the plane down the tarmac with no cargo? The next day they'd dropped my suitcase off on the front porch with no note or even a knock on the door. It was just sitting out there.

Never had a problem with United. They aren't great but I've had some damn good luck with them (free booze on a few international flights and flying on a near half full jet to Lagos and back which was a godsend - they let me switch seats from loud, crowded sections to quieter sections of the plane with empty rows). Regardless of being shocked at paying $7 a beer on a 13 hour flight (since when they charge for booze on international flights???) the good times have trumped the (very little if any) bs I've gotten from them.

United screwed me over big time when I was flying to Thailand last year. I had a stop over in Tokyo and they delayed the flight for hours without giving us any information. Finally, they made an announcement that the flight was canceled but no one was actually working at the gate. We had to run to the other side of the airport to get hotel vouchers. Once we got to the other side of the airport, no one there knew we were coming so we had to wait several more hours before they sorted things out. While waiting, they were kind enough to give us $5 food vouchers for McDonalds (10). Finally, they bussed us out to a hotel and told us that when we checked in, we would be given details on new flights. Of course no one at the hotel knew anything about flight arrangements so I spent the next few hours on the phone trying to get a flight the next day. There was nothing available and I was told I would probably have to wait 3 days for a flight. By this time, I had been awake and travelling for 30 hours and was approaching delirium. Finally I just decided to fuck it and booked a new flight with Japan Airlines. They were wonderful.

tl;dr never flying with United again.

USAir once stranded me in Chicago, the plane arrived late and everybody involved with their airline left the building (they stop operations around 6:30 there or something stupid. United bailed me out, getting on the line with the USAir people to get my flight transferred, and got me on a direct flight to my final destination. A 4 hour mess ended with me only being an hour late.

Of course, the next time I flew, it was United, and that was simply fubar, but that wasn't United's fault. It was an awful storm + Air Force One flying out the same day, and it involved three different airlines over a 23 hour period, and they all fucked up on that one... Too long a story to type out right now.

ive put so many miles on united all the horror stories are now like scrambled egg. even as elite for consecutive years ive never liked them. then relocated from a united hub to a continental hub, had a good year on continental , then bam -- united bought em up again, with their old planes with no power or avod.

but like its been said, ALL us-based carrier are scraping the bottom of the barrel.

the only redeeming thing about united is premium service from new york-california

Just flew AA internationally a few weeks ago Joffrey, booze was free. Food was abysmal. I'm sticking with AA though, because they fly to st Louis and code share with JAL. I don't have too many problems with planes when I'm traveling on my own, probably because I fly out of Seoul or Tokyo half the time.
Those airports tend to fly planes out on very good time.
