I have an event this weekend for which a sportcoat and dress shirt (no tie) would be appropriate. I thought I had a sportcoat or two that might work; however, I've gotten a little larger around the middle than I care to admit and my sportcoats are too small. Since I don't intend to stay this size, I bought a relatively inexpensive sportcoat at Harold's today.
It's tan and brown with hints of navy and burgandy. I thought a solid blue shirt would be a safe bet since shopping time is limited. I have two solid blues, one like this (but more of a baby blue) with a herringbone texture,
...and another with a straight collar and a pinpoint weave (similar to this one).
Are either of those shirts a good option? Does the herringbone pattern of the first shirt make it bit too formal for the tweed sportcoat? I tried on a blue OCBD, but just wasn't feeling it. Also, what color pants would you suggest?

I'd wear a cream shirt with that jacket and gray or olive slacks.

Main answer (from your options) -
Daytime - coat, pale blue shirt, tan slacks
Evening - coat, darker blue shirt, darker slacks

But, you'll want to try both looks and see which you prefer.

If it were me, I would be tempted to see how lilac works with the jacket. I would try lilac shirt, navy slacks, and that coat to see how it works for me.

Thanks for the replies. I picked up two shirts, cream and lilac, at lunch. I'll try them all and see which I like best. The concensus here and on AAAC (albeit a very small sample) was cream.
