1. She was pregnant while the season started, and I guess the writers didn't want to try to write that into the story.

2. There's no real reason for her to be in the story. Once she divorced Don and remaried, there was really not much else for the character to do.

Yeah, her storyline doesn't really matter except for how it relates to Don. And right now, she only relates to don by bringing the kids into the picture which can be done by the step-grandma.

With her having a baby it probably just made sense to not use her for anything...I've seen headlines about her being on set with the baby though so she's definitely filming things.

She is going to be a part of this season. The fat episode was there to remind us that she exists.

Don and Betty still have feelings for each other and they are not through with one another. Remember how Don reacted when she thought she had cancer? He acted as if he was her father. She will either be a part of his downfall or come in to save the day in some weird way.

A lot of you guys give January Jones a hard time, but you have to remember that Betty Draper (Francis) is an insufferable character. She is supposed to be boring and whiny. You are not supposed to like her; at least not right now. She is going to return in a big way at some point in the future.

Watch the X-Men Beginings movie (whatever it's called) and note January Jones is in it. Ask yourself self what you think about her when you're through.

So she plays Betty Draper in all her roles.

At least she's easy on the eyes... or was.

So what did the elevator shaft mean?

It sounded like the elevator noises were still playing in the background when Don stepped away from the doors and went to his office for a drink.

Really, if you see an elevator door open like that with no elevator there, isn't the first thing you should do is, call the super? Or just go have a drink and a chuckle about the poor sucker who's about to fall to his death because you couldn't be bothered to make a phone call?

How do you know he didn't tell the receptionist or his secretary to do it?

I guess we don't but if so it was not shown. What was shown was him going directly for a drink.

I think the elevator shaft thing was symbolic and not real. For a second I thought we were going into another dream sequence and glad it was just a short clip. I think Don looked into the abyss over Megan and was able to step back...at least for the time being. Why he went and had a drink is because he looked into the abyss over his life. His hot new wife, a little smarter and more independent than we all thought she might be last year, just told him his world, the world he's king of...sucks and is boring. She would rather have the professional life of Joey Tribianni over Madison Avenue and that after Don went on at length to her about that fact she is a natural and great at. She would rather be a loser in acting than a queen in advertising.

So Don's walk back to the office and pouring a drink was him convincing himself everything was normal and that his life had not really just had a huge challenge of legitimacy and prestige. Now Don is the one that gets home early and falls asleep waiting for his spouse. Oh how the tables have turned on Mr. Draper and he's barely aware of it. Yet.

Look for some big push back from Don as he seeks to restablish dominance. He married her to feel young and now she's making him into the expectant spouse that waits at home for some attention. The fact the start of the season had his 40th b-day featured was not random.

I agree it was symbolic, the question for me is, was it also an illusion? and if so, the show did not make that clear.

Good observation...
