This weekend I checked out a new espresso bar called Toby Estates. Some really good espresso actually. I like that when you order you give your order to the barista pulling the shot and get to talk to them about your tastes and such. The barista then tells the person at the register what you got. Makes so much more sense.

Tried it again this morning, and had more success -- I still had to dilute the result in my cup a little, because I don't like it that strong, but that is correctable by using fewer grounds. Will only make a little less than 8 cups at one go.
Current verdict: looks great; makes a better coffee than standard french press; keeps coffee hotter longer than french press because of double-hull stainless design. Still a mess to clean (like french press, I guess), which is a bit of a downer for somebody spoiled by the Aeropress like me.

I have the smaller one, and I'm guessing this isn't a problem for you, but if you make really small batches (like 6 oz. of coffee), a lot of liquid gets stuck under the filter, and the final yield is really low. Any hints?

Intelligentsia does this in their SoCal cafes, too, but not Blue Bottle, IME, but I get the feeling this is more the norm than not. My two local cafes are good about this too --- the bar is designed so the barista and cashier are standing next to each other, and you can talk to both at once if necessary.

More places in NYC should do this. As best I recall, Jack's, Joe, Third Rail, Grumpy etc all have you put your order in with the cashier. Granted, at a place like Third Rail, the bar is so small that it really doesnt matter.

I wish there was a two cup Aeropress, frequently have to make two rounds for the wife and myself. Maybe I just need to get a second one and be done with it, they're certainly cheap enough. More crap to keep in the kitchen though...

I usually use the inverted steeping method. Not sure how that would hold up with twice as much coffee, but I can give it a try.

Oh, I didn't know Nespresso was instant coffee. Thanks for telling me.

@Pliny: I just had it -- along with other rare coffees -- at some food fair. It was drip brew, so it tasted bad. I guess I'm one of the few people in the world that has spit out Kopi Luwak, Jamaica Blue Mountain etc.
