Last or shoe type: which determined fit?

Dear community
I recently bought a pair of loafers made on the Carlos Santos 401 last. I love the fit: snug in the heel and wide in the toes, which is perfect for me.

That makes me think my next pair of shoes (I need some Oxfords) should also be CS on the 401 last.

But it also occurs to me that it’s so important for a loafer to be snug in the heel, so maybe other shoes on that last wouldn’t necessarily fit the same way? Is the last the be all and end all when if comes to what determines fit, or is the shoe type also a factor?

Last is definitely a major player in fit, but shoe type joins the party too! The 401 last might hug your heel in loafers, but Oxfords on the same last could feel different. Try to find info on how that last fits for Oxfords specifically. In general, both last and shoe type matter for the perfect fit

Thank you, that’s very useful. I’ll write to CS.
