A colleague at work is getting married. We worked together on a couple of projects a couple of years ago and keep in touch since (we live in different cities). First time invited to an American non-relative's wedding. The bride wanted giftcards in lieu of gifts. What would be the right amount? Would appreciate your insights. Thank you.

What you had planned to spend would be a good amount, I think.

With that said, and although the request is for gift cards and not cash, I'd have trouble complying with this. I may be a bit prude, but a gift card to me is the same as cash. I don't give money as a gift, close relatives excepted.
