How are trousers' rear waistbands supposed to be made?

You are correct, but I have an excuse. Having not read the OP, I was lead to think this thread was about a split waistband rather than an open split or the "V" by connemara's non-sequitor on alterability. I guess from now on, I will have to read at least the OP before commenting.

This was interesting. I just checked a couple of my trousers and they in fact have a split waistband underneath the middle belt loop. The Incotex pronounced split shown does have its visual interest I guess.

Are you planning on teaching your tailor how to make trousers?

If not, just go with what he does normally.

They are a pink seersucker, the same fabric as on the jacket in the showroom. Flat front with side adjusters and cuffs.

Actually only 2 is right.

The closed waistband is easier to alter, there is more work to do to reconstruct the split after the alteration.
