From searching, it appears that the 258 is both larger than the 257 and padded. If I am planning to use the bag to carry a macbook in a sleeve, would the 257 be large enough to also accommodate some books and other stuff, or should I go with the 258? My concern is that if I use the bag without a computer, the padding will make the 258 look odd.

They're both very heavy. I'm a lumberjack and my 257 is a pain ********** to carry when it's full.

If you don't need that much space the 256 may be a better choice.

I use a 257 to carry my 15" HP laptop around in, plus a portfolio, a bunch of pens, a hardback book, papers etc. I think a 258 would be obtrusively big most of the time. The 258 also has a zippered external pocket, the look of which I am not entirely sold on.

I carry a 17" Toshiba (unsleeved) in my 257 every day - it fits, but barely. Most days there is a text and portfolio stuffed in there as well.

In summary, the 257 holds plenty. Unless you're a careless person, the padding seems unnecessary to me.

258 is huge, I don't see how it could be unobtrusive

Hmm, well it seems that the 257 is probably the proper size. I looked at the 256, and according to measurements, the 257 is only 2 inches larger in terms of depth; my concern is that the 256 will not be able to hold more than a laptop in a sleeve and small things, whereas it seems the 257 will hold a couple of books on top of that.

Does anyone have pictures of themselves or others carrying the 257? 257 from Crane's is $190 shipped - might have to get one for my birthday.

The 257 filled is pretty big also. I find there's one too many dividers inside it can become a ***** to find things quickly. That said, I get tons of compliments on my tan 257.

One warning though, if you wear raw denim it will rub off on the bag like an SOB.

I agree, the 257 is big. I've got each pocket and divider assigned a specific function now, but it can be a bit tricky in the beginning. Here's a photo I lifted from SW&D; it's a tan 257.

I'm having trouble deciding between the 256 and 257, need some help! I have a 15" MBP and want a bag that will be able to comfortably carry it, the power cable, and wireless mouse.

Will a 256 do, or should I jump up and get the 257?

Thanks in advance for the advice...
