Extended waistbands - what's the deal?

I've seen 'extended waistband' frequently listed as a feature of trousers - is there any benefit to this? Is it supposedly some sign of quality or just a feature listing?
I always wear a belt so aesthetically it makes absolutely no difference to me, except perhaps I i can see it mitigating any slight herniation of your midriff behind the belt buckle if you have a pooch there, but aside from that does it just boil down to personal preference?

I like them aesthetically but I usually never wear a belt any way except when I'm wearing jeans. The look reminds me of 80s golf trousers.
