Ebay restriction -- frustration

Dear Folks:

Earlier in December, I got an ebay restriction message when trying to revise, I believe a listing for a Thomas Pink shirt. That week, I was offering several.

In subsequent email exchanges ebay customer service tells me my listings on some items -- they won't tell which items, or how many -- are restricted. I can appeal this in six months, they say. But I don't know the nature of the sentence that has been passed on me.

I understand the goal -- to prevent sales of fake items -- but I frustrated in my attempt to find out just what I can or cannot do, or how often.

Has anyone else been through this lately? Any tips?

Hmm, never heard of this. What do they think they are accomplishing by keeping you in the dark??

Why are they doing this? Don't know. Also, note that this came up when they restricted me from revising one listing -- but not others of the same brand, if this was the item I recall [I was doing a blizzard of listings and sales during the holiday season]. No listings were removed.

Dear xxxxx,

Thank you for taking the time to write to eBay regarding the restriction
on your account.

We're unfortunately not able to be more specific at this point as to the
precise types of goods that will be affected by these initiatives. We
want to maintain flexibility to adapt our initiatives to maximize their
effectiveness, and also prevent fraudsters from easily evading them.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Max P.

Dear Ebay:

Which listings is this regarding?

It is hard to know how to respond without this information.

I list authentic items of many brands.

Which listings concern you in particular? Or which brands?

Regards,

mack11211

Dear xxxxx,

Thank you for writing eBay in regard to your selling limit.

If a seller lists a high volume of items of a type that are often
subject to counterfeiting, they may be prevented from listing additional
items or revising current listings of that type for a period of time.

After reviewing your account, it has been determined that the
restriction is appropriate and therefore will stay in place. The
restriction will stay in place indefinitely, unless you wish to appeal,
in which case you will need to write back to us in 6 months time. At
that point we will review your account and a decision will be made
whether to lift the restriction.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Freddy

I am confused.

I got this message when I was trying to revise listings that were
already running. They continued to run. No listings were removed, as far
as I know.

Are some of my listings causing concern to ebay? If so, which ones?
Also, do sellers have a limit to the number of listings they can place
in a week, or a month, or a year?

yours

mack11211

Dear mack11211,
Thank you for writing eBay in regard to the restriction that is on your
account.
In order to maintain a safe trading environment, selling limits are
occasionally placed on accounts. A restriction was placed on your
account to limit you from selling certain items.
Please keep in mind, you are not permitted to sell items on eBay bearing
the name or logo of a company if the product has not been made or
authorized by that company. In addition, the sale of counterfeit items,
unauthorized replicas and unauthorized copies is prohibited by law, and
therefore cannot be listed on eBay. Please note that it is the
seller=E2??s
responsibility to ensure that the items you are listing are authorized
for sale.
This policy also helps protect buyers from purchasing counterfeit or
fraudulent items and helps protect the intellectual property rights of
third parties.
As always, our goal is to keep the eBay marketplace a safe place to buy
and sell. Under our User Agreement, we may remove listings if they
breach one of our stated policies. Further, we may warn or suspend
sellers whose activities breach our policies.
I encourage you to read the information available on our Help pages
about why we may remove items from the eBay site.

Thank you for your time.

there is a limit to the number of listings one can start in a 7 day

listing that is already running. Yours, mack11211

You're probably gonna have to sue them to find out, or at least threaten to do so. It seems they do not wish to discuss the issue. I don't know if its worth it to sue them.

Ebay has been cracking down on stuff. When I revised one of my listings to indicate an item was no longer available, ebay shut down that listing (I had planned to revised it to list something else).

How can people stand ebay anymore? I dread listing stuff now. I have a bunch of stuff but I don't know anymore, they make it a total nightmare and charge you for it.

This policy is just absurd, but so is almost everything that ebay does to screw over sellers (with the help of paypal, of course).

Their days simply have to be numbered for having such a monopoly and with sellers feeling like they have no alternative. I'm not terribly up on the whole scene, but surely there MUST be a few other auction sites that are up and coming?

Or is it really that ebay is just too damn convenient?

The problem is that sellers don't use the other sites because those sites get far less traffic. And with fewer sellers, there are fewer buyers, and so the snake eats its tail.

I like how eBay is taking advantage of a bad situation (getting called out on its lax enforcement against the selling of counterfeit goods) to create yet another opportunity to strongarm users into giving PayPal access to their bank accounts, and thus give eBay/PayPal more chances to rip off users by holding money hostage and keeping it when inevitable disputes arise during transactions.

I figured that was the case.

Do we have on SF an ongoing thread or sticky of some other auctions sites for which members have had good experiences? I'm sure I could do an internet search, but I'd much rather get feedback from fellow users on sites that they might recommend. I for one would start frequenting those other sites, just to try and do my own little part.

On every forum I'm on (probably seven or eight by now), I've never met any seller who has said, "I LOVE ebay; it treats me so well!" Basically, everybody is of the same mind as we are. So, personally, I'd like to start looking elsewhere and slowly weaning myself away from the 'bay.

plus they screw you twice once with the crazy fees the with paypal, its really wrong that they punish people for using google checkout.what i think would be the greatest idea is for google to start their own auction sites, they certainly have the money and resources to rival ebay.

Just wanted to say I'm with you too...I had a couple rotten eggs in my last batch of sales transactions in the last couple weeks.

I think I'm done selling on eBay.
