Camel Coats

Given this is a classic menswear forum, I hope that plenty of people own an overcoat in the color described as "camel", "light brown" or "beige". I attached a picture as reference.

Previously, I never considered this color, as I don't own a black or navy coat I'm satisfied with yet. However, my interest peaked when I saw several very well-dressed men in camel: its an unusual color amidst mostly black and blue male outerwear, easy to combine with whites and blues, and, for some reason, wool makes this color look especially good.

Before buying into it, I have several questions:

1. Am I correct to assume that camel-colored coats are impractical and delicate? Any stain is instantly visible and ruins the appeal. It looks horrible when soaked. Washing a coat costs time and money.
2. How did people react to you wearing it, if ever? I believe it's a color that draws attention.
3. Do you regret or cherish your decision to invest in a camel coat?

No. And if you are inclined to get your coats stained, perhaps you should reconsider a wool or camel hair coat entirely. This is an urban coat. And never wash something like this, for goodness' sake.

"Hey! Nice coat!"

3. Do you regret or cherish your decision to invest in a camel coat?

I bought mine in London last year. I saw it in the window of Burberry and it was exactly what I had been looking for.

I think it calls for a double breasted design, with comfortably present (peak) lapels. Andy's is perfect. Your desired one looks like a Chesterfield dyed light brown rather than assuming its personality as a camel overcoat.

Ian McShane wears a shawl collared, raglan-shouldered one in American Gods, his bulk "complemented" by a slouchy, messy style:

Despite the apparent quality of the piece it makes him look like a tramp (which is the point, in the series). So I'd say in addition to the above, the camel coat calls for a certain sense of cleanliness and formality. What Andy calls "an urban coat" indeed.

Camel coats are fun but they will attract dirt. If this is going to be your main go to coat I would go with a grey or navy herringbone. Here is mine:

I had a British Warm years ago that I got from Austin Reed, back when it was still on Regent Street. It was a superb coat but, sadly, the moths got to it and I donated it to One Warm Coat. I'd love to get another and that link looks very interesting. Stowmarket, eh?

Yes, I've known of O'Connell's for years. But that UK tailor looked very interesting, too.

I have exclusively worn camel colored coats for years I have them dry cleaned every other year, no real wear and tear in season, never had any issue!

Roll down the collar big guy, wear a scarf and gloves and a felt hat. Leave the coat open unless the temps get into the teens. The coat doe not wear you, you are supposed to wear the coat.

I think he looks quite spiffy, with the exception, he needs a appropriate scarf to cover the bow tie. The hat is a personality trait, I would wear a different colored hat If I wore that coat; otherwise he looks urban in a urban environment, as a Mountain man strolling down Main street in Tombstone ND in his Bear skin coat with powder & musket .
