I like the look of JCrew, but I've been rather dissatisfied with their quality. What's a similar brand that's a step up in terms of quality, but not too high of price?

Also, do Brooks Brothers' Milano pants go on sale much? Right now they're 2 for $159, which is hardly a discount. Steve Smith suggests I look in B&S, but I have an uncommon size, at 29x32 (though BB doesn't have that size, so I'll have to try 30x32)

Thanks, but that's more than I was willing to spend on this gift. Any other ideas? Thanks.

does this work, or does it look to much like a suit jacket?

I don't think it works, because I think it looks like a suit jacket, and I don't like using suit jackets as sportcoats. But that's just me; there are other people who see nothing wrong with the practice.

I would point out, however, that since you want the jacket to serve in a role less formal than that of a suit - and that your outfit, overall, is relatively informal, as witness the pants (jeans?) - your choice of a white pocket square in a flat fold - a comparatively formal square in a comparatively formal fold - is a less than ideal choice. Rather than a white square in a flat fold, you ought to be wearing a colorful silk square, casually stuffed into your pocket. Otherwise - at least to me - the contrast between the informal elements of your outfit, and the relatively formal pocket square, is unpleasant and contrary to your intended portrayal of your jacket as something less formal than the top half of a suit.
