Are high end watches (e.g., Patek) gaudy?

I think that Panerai has a long way to go to getting back to Rolex status as far as retained value goes. 4-5 years ago they were crazy, but not since this recession. I've got an A-series pvd Panerai that I'd love to sell but don't have to (it's really a collector's watch and not one to wear and scratch), so I'll just hold it and maybe the market will come back. At least I didn't over-pay for it at the time.
