Alternative to Canada Goose?

This fall, I will be starting college. I'm going way up north, upstate New York, almost boarding Canada. I heard temperatures there in the winter average below 0. What is a nice, simple, and versatile jacket that will keep me warm, besides Canada Goose? Besides keeping you warm, the jackets don't really appeal to me. Or perhaps someone can find me one of their better looking models?

Moose Knuckles (Yes, the name is really silly) I own their bomber parka and I have to say, it is one of the warmest and best looking jackets I have ever seen/owned. I go to school in Eastern Canada where the winter weathers can dip to -35deg celcius and I was perfectly warm wearing a t-shirt underneath this jacket. I tried them on in the Montreal Holt Renfrew and did comparisons with multiple Canada Goose jackets and I have to say, the Moose Knuckles were better, imho. Budget might be a big help here. I guess if you were looking at an alternative to Canada Goose your price range is a pretty high one as far as winter jackets go.

I'd recommend jackets from Arc'Teryx, Sierra Designs, Patagonia or Mountain Equipment Co-op.
All all very simple, not heavily branded, and the quality is the same as Canada Goose. Canada Goose jackets take a back seat in terms of functionality. They're much too bulky for my liking, I like slim fitting jackets that are meant more for active use and mobility.

Canada Goose is really the best option IF you need that sort of warmth. If you can get ahold of the japanese line CG(probably not) that is your best option for really nice looking CG, but there are some nice ones here http://www.antarcticconnection.com/A...02&cat=Men%27s they also have sz XXS and up.

Woolrich makes similar looking parkas. I don't have first-hand experience but I was looking online for a coat a while ago and Fjallraven seems to have some serious jackets that will perform and will last, and look good too. Check out their greenland jacket.

If you aren't stuck on getting a parka, how about a pea coat? Make sure it's made of heavier wool. I'm sure you already know about Sterlingwear's coats. eBay will also have a ton of vintage US Navy pea coats. I have one that's 60 years old and weighs a ton!

I have owned two different pea coats, the latter being WWII Navy issue (has the serviceman's name, part of SS, etc. painted inside) and neither have really been warm at all, despite being ridiculously heavy. . .

There's not way you need Canada Goose where you're going. That stuff is designed for the Arctic.

I was outside this past winter at -45 (and on one notable occasion -50) with the windchill with a peacoat (over layers of course) and I was nice and toasty.

I like stuff from the North Face. Warm and functional.
