The passing of the late great Jeff Beck reminded me of a story. I had a chance to play Jeff Beck's 1954 blackguard Esquire. It was the one he got while in the Yardbirds and used to record "Heart Full of Soul" (an important early psychedelic rock sound). Seymour Duncan owned it and brought it to the Dallas Guitar Show. When the show closed for the evening a few of us were invited up to his room and I got to play it. There was friction between Beck and Duncan about it. Duncan claims he got it in trade for the work he did on Beck's Les Paul (shown on the cover of Blow by Blow) but Beck says it belonged to him and Seymour wasn't about to give it up. Seymour still has it.

I’ve been doing that to watch my form and confirm how horrific my singing voice is. I find it helpful. Would love to see more experienced players post instructive clips here, even if they’re links to YouTube channels.

I do. It’s not pretty. it’s fun for me though.

i finally got out the chest of mics n stuff ...

so i'm soliciting ideas for a decent mic setup in our music room , i have the following :

- sennheiser mk-4 large diaphragm condenser
- shure pencil condenser
- shure sm58

... and then a 2-channel interface to put the mics into a laptop .

for sanity's sake i'd like to not have to tinker with setup all the time , i'd prefer something reasonably semi-permanent ... i'm thinking about hanging the LDC from the ceiling between the amp and drums for baseline recording and then filling in with one of the other mics as needed . or maybe get a bigger interface . i'm thinking way more about capturing live than like layering tracks , this is for performance feedback not necessarily songwriting or polished recordings .

what say you ?

For that purpose, a couple of omni mics placed well in the room would give you everything you need. But, and I say this from experience, a well placed iPhone would do the same thing with even greater simplicity.

anyways i think a lap steel collector in my town must've passed b/c my local spot is absolutely flooded with vintage rn ... i think i saw a weissenborn style a few weeks back but they're mostly 40s-60s electric , might be i'll go through and find a good one to lowball

anyways i think a lap steel collector in my town must've passed b/c my local spot is absolutely flooded with vintage rn ... i think i saw a weissenborn style a few weeks back but they're mostly 40s-60s electric , might be i'll go through and find a good one to lowball

If you can find an early 50's Fender Champ lap steel at a good price they do have a wonderful sound and are much easier to resell or trade than other brands. E.G. Smith loves them for their tone.

i'm not shopping to resell , they have a mother-of-toilet-seat fender with the plank headstock but it's not cheap , i'm a bit more interested in the gibsons tbh i need to look back and see what pickups they have , i think they were eh models ...

For the bass, troll Reverb for a nice US made Fender J-bass. Just prior to COVID I landed a mint one for $600.

Excellent suggestion for a used MIUSA J-bass

I dropped into ye olde guitar shoppe to look around ... i'm now very strongly considering a short scale bass , fender mustang or equivalent .

also I may go a little bigger on the amp but it will be something 40-100w or so .

Strong US dollar provides a chance to get a MIJ Fender Aerodyne Bass for a decent price.
