Recall that when the Maritime was introduced there was a companion loafer with same material (Horween CXL) in pretty much the same colors. The name escapes me but it showed that a super casual loafer can act as the functional equivalent of a boat show and vice versa, as long as you don’t actually wear it on a boat.?

Next, since most here could fairly be called shoe “enthusiasts,” which is pretty darn close to a hobbyist, I’m curious what interests other folks here have that competes for you time and your shoe dollar (well, other than paying the light bill, getting food, etc.).

Well...

Clothes. Goes hand in hand with shoes, I suppose. Along with a collection of eyeglasses and now hats.

Apparently gardening, after reviewing my spending on various pots and plants, which was much higher than I ever imagined it would be. One could consider pots after a certain size to be capital assets, frankly.

Because I need to live in the future, now.

Collecting board games. I have a whole wall dedicated to shelving for them.

My dual sport motorcycle and accessories.

Camping and camping gear.

There's other hobbies, too, but these are where the money goes. Life is expensive!

First, shoes. RL x AE Singleton (?). Proof a 2 last loafer can actually work with high instep folks because of the cone on the 2 last (RIP).

Next, since most here could fairly be called shoe “enthusiasts,” which is pretty darn close to a hobbyist, I’m curious what interests other folks here have that competes for you time and your shoe dollar (well, other than paying the light bill, getting food, etc.).

We’ve seen cars, guns, woodworking tools. What say you?

I’m no guitar collector (and barely a player); up until a week or two ago I had one acoustic (HD-28) and one electric (Epiphone Les Paul). Now, however, I have welcomed to the stable my first hollow body: the first in 51 years made in USA Epiphone Casino (basically a Gibson ES-330 and made by Gibson).

Sorry, I am a shoes only guy. Cheap clothes, cars, and hobbies. I do have a big humanitarian side. I recently bought some M&M’s, gummy bears, and some cake decorations for a child in Venezuela. His mom was so happy that she could send these things to her son. Never knew $10 could buy so much happiness.

See, that’s the difference between hiking, at least “day hiking” and not “thru hiking,” versus camping. With hiking, once you get a good pair of boots and/or trail shoes, and maybe some water bottles and a small pack to hold them and some food, you don’t really have to spend any more money to have a great time.

On the other hand, you can end up spending a LOT on camping/outdoors gear. Two years ago we spent a week hiking in Olympic Park followed by a few days in Seattle where we visited the mothership stores of Filson and REI. You can drop a lot of coin in a hurry in those places. A LOT. “Yes, honey, I know I can get an ax this size at the farm & home co-op back home for $19.95 but this $199 ax is RED and it says “Filson” on it so it is so much better.”

Well, that's probably $10 better spent than most of my dollars. We all ought to try to carve out more space for humanitarian efforts.

So true. I'm actually more of a thru hiker type myself. Or more specifically, I like to take the bike for a killer ride through places like Mojave and just go from camp to camp. Only need a bivvy, stove, and a few dehydrated meals with water. Oh, and my HAM radio just in case. But my ex and I run (or I should say, ran, after the lockdowns) a group that takes 10-15 people camping at various parks. Now that needs giant tents, chairs for people, spare headlamps, fancy camp kitchen supplies because people want real food, amenities for inside the tents... how did I get sucked into this again??

I enjoy riding my Bicycle on the weekends, not a mountain bike. I usually ride 15-20 miles each time. nothing like riding in the early mornings before the Texas heat starts.

For those clamoring for more pictures of Santa Monica Pier in shoe threads, California reopened today. Everything is now at 100% capacity again,"Social Distancing" is gone, and Fully Vaccinated people no longer have to wear face masks except in medical buildings, prisons, and homeless shelters.

For fans of "Sci-Fi becomes Sci-Reality" pictures in shoe threads, the food delivery robots on the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica don't look anything like the robots in Sci-Fi or horror films.

Since I brought up robots, robots and I have a rather checkered past. In the early eighties, when I still worked on the train from time to time, made many trips to San Diego. One of the other guys and I always used to walk down to a shopping area by the water and have lunch.

One day we were sitting down eating our lunch and a lttle robot rolled up to us and started talking to us. I told the robot we were eating and didn't want to talk with it. The robot kept talking.

I told the robot if it didn't go away I would kick it over the edge into the water. For some reason the robot didn't believe me, so I kicked it over the edge into the water.

The little robot may still be there. A few minutes later someone came up and started yelling at us. We ignored him.

This seems like the beginning to a third Short Circuit film.

Whelp, I have always loved Ford Mustangs (currently have a hot rodded ‘70), love football and softball/baseball (and did a lot of playing and coaching), but something that I’ve enjoyed a long time is cooking all sorts of things to perfection. I have a hard time buying steaks in a restaurant anymore, or a lot of things really, because I can do them better. I don’t bake, but everything else, including the all night brisket smokes, are fair game. Lately I’ve been in love with craft coffee (currently enjoying Sagebrush roasted coffee with my Hario V60). Yes, my wife is very lucky.

One of these days, I want to learn to play guitar.

I started collecting Jeep CJs when my kids were young & enjoyed riding w/ the top-down. They learned how to work on cars and drive a stick, starting at about 6 y.o. Switched to Toyota$ some years ago...

I started collecting as a teenager. They're little marvels of engineering and art / craftsmanship.

I've read many guys writings about getting into shoes as an alternative to watch collecting. Compared to watches, shoes are a bargain.

Perhaps a Southern thing, but I've always appreciated well-made firearms. I call them "heirloom quality" (a phrase I coined to try to stop my (ex)wife from complaining). Of all my hobby-related expenditures, my guns have actually appreciated in value while most others are $-pits.

My newest shiny rock. Been dabbling in paintings mainly, from Artists / locales that capture my attention. This hobby can catapult to first place in expediture pretty quickly.

I'm fascinated by the engineering marvels of the 1970's in film cameras. Mainly 120 film but also 35mm. It's like a time-machine when I use them in public. Folks are dumbfounded by these devices.

I've got too many to count (just like shoes).

And, of course, shoes...

Other afflictions exist, but these are the most serious.
