Opinion on bomber jacket fit

Hi,

I am a newbie who just purchased my first bomber jacket. Was wondering if I could have some opinion from those who are more knowledgeable. Your thoughts are much appreciated.

I am 5'9 about 178lbs and usually wear 44/54. Initially I tried this jacket at 46/56 because SA said this particular jacket runs small. The shoulder was snug but the stomach area was tight when buttoned (I do have a bit of excessive belly). There's not enough room for a sweater either. So I went with 48/58 which seems more comfortable overall. But as I tried it on more at home it seems the jacket maybe too big as there seems roomy around the shoulder and the arm pits. With certain postion/motion, "wrinkles" or "bags" seem to form just between my torso and shoulder joint just above the arm pits. Is this normal? It seems like a big jump going from 44/54 to 48/58 even if the jacket runs small. Please see the pictures in the link.

Thank you very much for your thoughts.

It looks OK. Sleeves a bit long if anything and I see the vertical creases at the chest/shoulders but they are meant to fit big and as a cold season jacket accommodate layers underneath. Of course the fashion mags these days are all about close fitting tailored and fitted tackle which is fine for suits, sports jackets etc. but I disagree with them advocating skin tight leather jackets. A nice looking A2 has a military ancestry and should not fit you like a sausage skin. I'm a different shape to you (6 feet 1 and 170 lbs) but I got a beautiful Avirex A2 in 1989 which is loose fitting on me and it still comes out a few times each winter.

Nothing wrong with it, but it depends on how you are going to wear it. If you will have a sweater on under, it's probably fine, and if not, it looks a bit big in the shoulders. Post a picture buttoned up and one with a sweater under.

This seems very odd. Have you been measured for size?

It looks a little too big on you IMO. How does it feel though?

What sort of size is this? Not American jacket size? It was just so odd that I assumed it was Asian or something.

For reference I am 5'11, 180 lbs and I wear a 40 jacket, 32 waist. . .

Well he wrote 44/54 so it means US/Eur sizes. Yes, I would think 5'9" <180lbs would be closer to 40 than 44.

Sleeves look a bit long, there appears to be a lot of extra fabric in the elbows but it seems to fit fine everywhere else.

I just had my chest measured and it comes out to be about 41.5". My sportscoats are 44 which seems to fit ok though I admit they were purchased based on trying on in the stores rather than measured. My previous casual jackets were simply Size L. I am still puzzled though that the jacket pictured is 48/58 yet most posts suggest it looks about right or slightly big. Why is there such a large inconsistency between the labeled size and measured size? I can understand a difference of one size due to different cut/styles but jump of 2-3 sizes in order to have a right fit seems a bit drastic. Does it mean that I shouldn't rely on the standard sizing chart for leather jackets? Thanks again for your comments. I am learning lots on the forum.

In general most sizes only bear a general correlation to standard sizes - even within brands. I have 3 jackets, sportscoats/odd jackets, in the one brand from 38 through 40, to 42. When measured properly with a tape they measure roughly the same across shoulders, length, sleeves, etc. S,M,L XL, seem to mean even less conformity to any standards. I'm not even sure there is an ISO9000 standard - can any standards people shed any light? Come to think of there should be a ISO standard

Not bad. The sleeves are noticeably long, but that's coming from the perspective of a SF member. Most people won't notice or think twice about the sleeves. The jacket MAY be a little full around the torso, but I'd need to see it zipped to definitively make that call.

Yes. It is indeed a little large in the torso/shoulders. Not bad in real life, but noticeable to a SF member.
