Dyeing a briefcase

I have a briefcase given to me at a school where I used to teach. Nothing special; Samsonite, perfectly functional, black leather and good for a laptop. But it does have the school name written in white ink of some kind, and I'd like to cover that. Is there a dye that will cover that, possibly restore some color as well to the bag, without the color bleeding onto clothes if I carry the bag by shoulder strap? I have another, wheeled briefcase that my wife bought me while I was recovering from an injury (which I'm sure I'll need again some day, since I'm not getting younger), so I'd just as soon avoid buying a third one. One of my kids tried to cover it w/ magic marker/sharpie, but I can still see the writing, and I'd like to improve it overall. I've got lots of leather cleaner and conditioner, but not sure what to do about the color/writing. I worry that shoe polish or wax will come off on a nice suit and be more trouble than it's worth. Any suggestions?

Definitely use some leather conditioner and clean it before you try anything, the only thing I would suggest is using black polish and some sort of weather-proofing to seal it, that should cover any white on the briefcase and help keep the polish on.
