That bow video is super cool.

But I've got to say...this knife sharpening video from the same people feels a little off. Little weird seeing a guy wearing a roughspun tunic, sitting in front of a large anvil...sharpening a knife with a little plastic gizmo.

I am getting annoyed by these fetishistic, anal-retentive videos. So you made a bow out of a log, so ******* what?...masturbation.

I actually really liked it, although part of that is probably because my dad and I (well, mostly my dad) made a bow together when I was 10 or 11 years old.

It's nice to think that there are people like SkinnyGoomba and the bow-maker (or bowyer) in the video out there, still making things by hand, preserving time-honoured, ancient skills.

Sure, perhaps it's not practical. Perhaps it could have been done many times faster using machines. However, the same can be said about many of the clothing details that we like here on SF - floating canvas chest-pieces, hand-attached collars, hand-stitched buttonholes and so on.

Please don't equate this guy with a furniture maker. There are approx 8 thousand years in skills between stone age bow making and making a proper furniture.

P.S. When I was a kid we were running around forest and made bows out of tree branches with no tools, just a rock and a piece of fishing line. You pick a leafy tree growing near water and test branches to see how much spring it has, once you found a decent one, there is your bow. Needless to say if it was today some millennial would make a video about it .

Great video D!

If anyone is watching and wondering why he works from riven lumber all the way through to a nearly sized product by shaves and hatchets, it is to eliminate grain runout. Any runout would likely cause the bow to fail in use.

Such a cool work to film I think they did a nice job of it.

Agreed, that video seems disingenuous.

....And the paper test is not hard to pass. A hanging hair.....now we're talking :D

I know a few sharpening nuts and they're more likely to don a lab coat and one of those magnifying monocles that watchmakers wear, than a roughspun tunic.

You may appreciate that my shop wear is typically an old OCBD and chinos.

I tend to go the direction of the Japanese blacksmith's who all seem to look like they got lost on their way to the office and decided to become a smithy mid-morning after rolling their sleeves up.

My son wants a longbow. I told him no.

How old/tall is your son? I looked it up and I guess a longbow is defined as "roughly equal to the height of the user," but historically they were 5-6'. Just seems impractical for a young kid.

Yes, I was totally wondering about grain runout the whole time.

Actually, I'm kidding. I had to google it to find out what it was. The first hit was on the Ukulele forums.
