Best night ever.

Finally after nearly 6 months of planning our surprise party for my mom's 60th birthday went down without a hitch. The plan was hatched with my aunt who graciously hosted it all. We sent out invites, everyone accepted, and went through some stressful times to make sure no one leaked anything and setting up the elaborate plan to make everything fall in place. This last week was horrible as so many variables were in play to get her to the place on time and get everyone there without being noticed.

We got around 30 of her closest friends and family together today and she arrived on time. We got some old friends, and a couple brothers flew in as a surprise. Was amazing seeing the look on her face when we sang happy birthday when she walked in the door, something I'll never forget. Everyone commented on how great everything was, we played a couple games I created, watched some old videos and said our goodbyes.

I hope when I am 60 I have as many people that love me even 1/10 as much as we do to her.

Friday - Saw Cross Canadian Ragweed and Cowboy Mouth at the 9:30 club. Knew little to nothing about either band before hand and left a huge fan of CM.

Saturday - Had an early St. Patty's day celebration by heading to Harp & Fiddle and Union Jack's in Bethesda. Partied till about 4:30.

Friday dinner was nice. We met up with another couple for some dinner and drinks.

We went early to sit and have a few drinks on the lounge side, they have a jazz trio in Thurs-Sat. Got seated about 7.

Starters: chilled rock crab claws, ahi with miso-wasabi sauce, spicy calamari.

Entre: 12 oz fillet mignon stuffed with chanterelle mushrooms, covered in Hollandaise sauce with huge lumps of blue fin crab meat, garnished with grilled asparagus.

Family style sides: horse radish/garlic mashers, sauteed mushrooms (never too many mushrooms!), hugely thick, home-made onion rings.

Dessert: creme brule for two, topped with fresh berries.

Dinner wine: two bottles of 2004 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir, Kanzler Vineyard

Dessert wine: for me 1963 Taylor-Fladgate port.

It was about 10:30 when we finished dinner so we headed to a small bar (not club or lounge, but a good old fashioned watering hole) where some friends were playing a celtic jam.

Back home about 2, fairly drunk, we sat in the hot tub for about an hour and went in and crashed.

*******, why not. Weekend of 8-9 March. Saturday was my buddy A's birthday. We threw him a party in my place Friday night. Another friend is just getting started as a drum and bass DJ so we set him up in a corner and moved furniture around to get a good flow going, which eventually didn't matter. People started trickling in around 11 and we had probably 50 people by midnight. Things were great, with friends bringing friends and lots of new connections being made. Had folks from at least 7 different countries and five or six different social groups. There were around 70 people in the place (~95 sqm/950 sqft) when a house representative showed up at 1 to ask us to turn it down "because people had to work in the morning." Saturday morning. Ahuh, come in and have a beer or **** off man. Cops showed at 2 and thank God this wasn't America: whoever answered the doorbell left the door open to come looking for me but the Rendorseg never walked in to start carding/checking for illicit substances. Anyway, all they did was take my ID information and say they'd "take me away" if they had to come back. No matter, it's 2 already and I'm ready to sack up with one of the girls from the party, so kill the music and get everyone out by 3. There had been a ton of typical party drama: A hooked up with a couple of girls, including one whose friends were freaking out that she "has a boyfriend." French dude gave my drunk roommate some lip and found himself escorted out head first. Drunk girls crying on the couch, funny drug interactions, shady Russians playing cards in the corner. All told had 100-120 people come through between 11 and 3, the DJ kept the place rocking with great energy, and a great time was had by all. I had myself a nice night while everyone else moved out to a club that's a couple blocks away, Mono. I'll be checking it out tonight and may write it up tomorrow.

Saturday morning I went to buy some trash bags for the cleanup and got run over by an American backpacker looking for her hostel, more on that later. Night we had a quiet birthday dinner for A, grabbed a couple of beers, and home by 2. Had a call from the American girl earlier in the night, but it was too late to meet up with her. Girl from the night before was feeling tired and guilty and didn't want to meet up again.

Sunday got together with the American girl, showed her around a little bit, hit a couple of the prototypical Budapest bars, brought her home and got high on the couch. Oops--game off. I'm definitely not a pot person, and couldn't figure out which words would go with which actions to get us into bed.

Ah well, met up to go to the baths on Monday, walked around the park for a while, really nice dinner at Klassz, my favorite place in town, and back to my place again. No mistakes this time and we had a great night. Had to blow off yoga with the Fri night girl in order to do it but she got over it.

Tue was supposed to meet a third girl for drinks, see if there was anything there. Went shopping with Fri night girl to make amends, decided to reschedule that night's date to get together with the American girl. Couldn't get a hold of her, so tea with Fri night girl until late. Bed alone, thank goodness. Got a phone call from the American girl at 3 am. She had run into A at a club, he hooked her up with some E, and she didn't want to sleep alone. She came over about 3 and we spent the next day in bed. Never did get together with Tue night girl, but s'ok. Rushed to put American girl on her bus to Rome but missed it by 5 min and spent another night at my place. We got on shockingly well and will probably get together in Paris next week.

Meantime been having a good time with Fri night girl. I'm trying to get over a stupid case of heartbreak and these last couple of weeks are finally getting my head back together, after four months of listlessness. It's good to feel desired again. Spending the last month in the gym has produced surprisingly fast results, getting great feedback.

Friday's my birthday, and nothing planned yet. Will probably just get sloshed with a few guys...

Anybody else think of the montage sequence in The Rules of Attraction where the goofy looking guy speed-describes his trip through Europe?

Tom, you're a Great American Hero.

Victor Ward, later of Glamorama. And yes, I had it playing in my brain. Tom - well done!
