Although I love NYC, that's one of the things I dislike about the city.

I never get approached by people. Its probably because everyone is so intimidated by my striking good-looks

You could start a conversation with damn near anybody down town and get a smile out of them. Westlake/Lakeway/Cedar Park are not quite a open, but still very much friendly areas as well.

I live in Atlantic Canada. It's impossible to walk in a store without a conversation with a stranger.

i've noticed after tailoring my shirts and wearing AE PA's i get a eyefucked a lot more by cuties driving their cars. and i also get better customer service.

ah the perks of looking good.

usually i'm the one starting the conversation if i'm bored and they look receptive to banter. sometimes they initiate if i don't have my srs face on.

i was shocked the first time i went to the US how often people strike up conversations with strangers.

i see this as being a mainly North American phenomena.

So it varies by neighborhood too. Interesting. I hear Minneapolis is very friendly too. Look for a 'friendliest cities for tourists' thread soon. Scratch that, look for a 'friendliest cities with hottest coeds in mud wrestling tournaments' thread coming soon.
