i recently received a tie as a gift and i find it a bit too wide for my slender frame, is there any way i can make the tie thinner? perhaps by doing some folding and ironing?

Yes, ties can be narrowed, but you'll want to have it done professionally - find a local tailor that can do it or send it to a company like Tie Crafters (tiecrafters.com).

+1 for tiecrafters.

i sent a tie over to them and it cost me $30 to clean and reduce width.

however, the turnaround time was 2 weeks, and they made me pay the shipping on their terms, which was 2 day shipping via ups...pricey for a slow turnaround time.

I have done this operation myself. Basically you will need to take the whole tie apart and cut back the lining as well and repress and sew tie to its new size. Not particularly fun, but if you are cheapskate like me, it does the trick.

Yes, this is also an option. Just be warned, it can take a long time to do if you're not familiar with what you're doing.

Any decent tailor can reduce a tie. Just bring in a tie whose measurements you prefer and tell them to replicate the width on the one you want changed.

None of my tailors will alter ties. I alter my own just fine. Took me about 2 practice tries, but they actually look quite nice now.

1) unstitch the seam
2) take out lining and cut it to the desired width
3) put the lining back inside the pocket and center it inside the tie and tack the lining down with some very loose stitches
4) fold the silk around the lining and press it to make a press seam
5) pin the silk to keep it in place
6) stitch the tie back up, this is the hardest part if you don't know how to do a hidden stitch, but I guess you can stitch it anyway you want, just be careful to not accidentally stitch the lining too.

So you're saying you don't have any experience tiecrafters reducing the width on a seven fold tie. Thanks.

I've been trying to get in touch with tiecrafters since the start of the year but they're not responding to my emails. I've used both of their listed email addresses and the contact form on their website to no avail. Is poor communication normal for them?

if you don't send the tie to tiecrafters for narrowing, you'll just be pissed off and will wish that you had.

They do it right, and have handled every brand and type (from Kiton to Ben Silver) of tie I've sent them, 100% satisfied with the results.
