I don't really subscribe to the cold = Islay thing, I like the smoke enough to drink it year round. I can defiantly understand why one would save the smoky scotches for the cold though, they remind me of roaring fall and winter fireplaces.

I had some of this this weekend. I like smoke, for the most part, and have no problem with it. But man, this scotch was nothing but smoke. Just absolutely overpowering smoke, completely one-noted. I was not a fran.

I did. 2 ice cubes and a small splash of water. I was hoping after a few minutes it might open up, but it never did. I should give it another try sometime and give it a little more water.
I have to admit, there were certain parts of the finish that were reminiscent of bacon fat, and that was pretty damn nice.

I think that might be too much water unless you were drinking the cask strength version. The ice probably didn't do it any favors either. Cold temperatures mute the subtle flavors in distilled spirits. I'm guessing that the ice dropped the temp significantly and all you ended up tasting was in the smoke. Neat, or with a drop of water, I find the 10 to be medicinal on the nose, rather sweet on the palette and salty, or bacony, on the finish.

Normally a libation, but tonight it's fresh squeezed blood orange juice and club soda, with a squeeze of Persian lime. Counterintuitive for the weather, but delightful.
