I was a philosophy major in college, and I'm pretty sure none of my professors referred to themselves as philosophers, though one may have merited the title. Still, teaching philosophy is a pretty sexy gig - especially is it's something like 19th Century Continental or something. Just don't be an ancient philosophy professor because then you're just a history/language teacher. I honestly don't care what the average person thinks of my work/profession, but I do want to be considered good at what I do by those who are in the know.

The interest my career choice seems to invoke in other people certainly helps compensate for the (temporarily) piss poor salary. Yet it still pales in comparison to the personal satisfaction I take from it.

This must have been before you came to the United States to pursue your dream of being a stylist like Paul Mitchell.

Most jobs the media thinks of as sexy aren't. We used to laugh bitterly when the NYT would have another idiotic story about how great it is to be a Wall Street lawyer or I-banker and make all the cash the writer's husband apparently made. The current spate of oh hai should I be a lawyer 2 make mad bank kthxbai threads makes me cringe.

No snark: a friend once told me, Do what you enjoy and the money will come. Totally untrue. But if you do what you like doing and don't hate your life, you generally get used to making what you make, even if it's not the astonishing amounts of money we daydreamed about making as a kid.

Made fried chicken using the Esquire Mafoofan Commemorative Issue recipe (brined in coke). Not bad.

Coca cola? Or *sniff sniff*?
I'm not sure either sounds that appetizing.

what job is really sexy? i mean, IME, if you do what you "love" you will love it a lot less once it's a mandated profession or means to an end.

You don't think getting paid to eat vag and ass would be fun?

Think hard about that statement young kwilkie... I am reminded of the old saying that becoming a partner in a law firm is like winning a pie-eating contest where the prize is more pie. How much pie can a guy take?

A little bit. Not in a bad way.

not with a hot light on my bald head, and/or eating vag that took 4 loads diuring a morning shoot.
i love drawing more than anything but worked for dc for 3 months and hated panel to panel continuity. you will invariably have to compromise doing what you love once it's a "career" so i prefer to separate my passions from my career/job/whatever. thought advertising was a fair compromise but i rteally would be just as happy running a deli or working sanitation if it paid the same.

Yeah, all things being equal it matters. But putting aside what personal satisfaction I'd get going to work everyday, at this hypothetical cocktail party, it matters more in a way that my job says that I'm "smart" and have my **** together. Teh intellectual respect, I must haz it.

You seem to be under the false impression that a professor's main job is teaching. I happen to be into doing research in Ancient (and detest continental).
